the quote tweet is great but the whole original post is a pretty interesting read, especially this section which i think is very relevant in this, the age of layoffs, studio closures, and the chronic loss of institutional knowledge

From that perspective, I can say that Dark Souls didn’t suddenly become a massive success overnight. It was the result of everything Miyazaki and his team had built up through their previous titles.

Today, he receives offers from all over the world, but when I think back to the days when he and his team were struggling the most, many of those offers seem like they’re coming from people who only know who they are today. Some of them almost feel like complete reversals in attitude. Well, that’s just my personal perspective.

Personally, I had grown tired of people who would simply compare games by saying things like, “That title cost X billion yen to make and sold Y million copies,” and then use nothing but those numbers to judge them against other games. There were so many people who couldn’t appreciate the journey or the growth of the developers themselves. Anyone can look at the current numbers—they’re available to everyone. Whenever I heard those kinds of opinions, I always thought, “That’s exactly what you’d expect from someone who’s never actually developed games.”
What surprised me even more was that, even if people couldn’t properly evaluate that journey, almost nobody even seemed interested in trying to understand the process of how those developers gradually reached where they are today.

utterly bonkers set of steps to uninstall some software ('autodesk genuine service' simply refuses to be uninstalled until you've done all this stuff. manually deleting appdata folders and registry keys and all sorts)

hell yea messy desk devs rise up

Photo of my desk. There's a chair sure and some screens, one ultrawide with a Unity window open with a green chunk of level floating in it. The desk itself though... pandemonium. Behind the keyboard and mouse (which are on a dark desk mat) are a cornucopia of bits and bobs. A squat cylindrical drinks flask, stationery in pots, a passport, desk fidget bits, post its, a tiny trophy, a little tanuki statue..

There's also a chunky mic on an arm, a little tablet showing a chunk of map, a controller. The desk is in a corner, on the wall to its side is a cork board with another mess of photos, post cards, a Discworld calendar showing 'Visit The Chalk' with a green landscape. On the wall behind the desk are a set of mismatched artworks, including a sick Japanese Rollerdrome poster, some custom-made Sonic 3 cinema tickets, a pixel art Samus, and a Bob Ross style painting of an orange sunset over a winter forest glade.

On the black computer tower, in the corner by the desk, sits a Waluigi plush. He is my supervisor.

To the left of the picture, so behind me when I sit at the desk, is a tall bookshelf. On the top is a plant, then some Brandon Sanderson books underneath, and THEN a glimpse of the Sonic shelf beneath that, featuring a big plastic Sonic, an Eggman plush from Sonic and friends, and other smaller bits alluding to much more out of frame. Beneath that are some Switch games with a devkit grey Wii remote and nunchuck and Pikmin trinkets, and the bottom few shelves are Discworld and misc other books. There is more tat on the floor by the seat, but it's obscured because I'm hanging an oodie off the back of the chair, because damn it gets cold in here in winter. Speaking of, under the desk are a row of four slippers, two pairs. One pair are shaped like blue LEGO bricks and looking a bit worse for wear. The others are also blue but look a bit cosier and neater.

i've just finished watching Andor and it's incredible to me that a star wars tv show of all things has made me feel the things it has made me feel. but given <everything> happening, i still feel helpless. what ARE the 'random acts of insurrection' i can even do? what can we do? really?

There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this. Freedom is a pure idea.
