Every year this part of the Grove entry on Amy Beach sticks out to me and some day I'll find the energy/time to track down where it comes from. It can't be accurate, right? Singing 40 tunes at age 1? Improvising alto lines before 2? Feels a little more than precocity!

He struck stuff from the record that made Schumann seem less anti-semitic (not that Schumann didn't have some of this in the first). I ran across an article in the NYT from Anthony Lewis where a couple of prominent musicologists justified bringing Boetticher to the US despite his known issues:

Article from Anthony Lewis February 18, 1982: "The conference must deal with present reality," Professor Finson wrote to a scholar who had questioned the invitation to Dr. Boetticher. "Mod-ern-day Schumann scholars would be crippled without the sources under [his] control. Participation in the conference will not serve to endorse the moral stance of any particular individ-ual."'
In a telephone interview Professor Finson said that Dr. Boetticher's references to Jews in his 1941 dissertation could be seen as the result of implicit Nazi compulsion. "I don't applaud it," he said, "but I understand how somebody in the German university system could have been induced to do such a thing." He added that Dr.
Boetticher had taught repeatedly at Oxford and Cambridge and attended a conference in this country in 1961.

One of the best-known of all Hollywood anecdotes involves the movie's confusing plot, based on the equally confusing novel by Raymond Chandler. Lauren Bacall recalls in her autobiography, "One day Bogie came on the set and said to Howard,
'Who pushed Taylor off the pier?'
Everything stopped." As A.M. Sperber and Eric Lax write in "Bogart," "Hawks sent Chandler a telegram asking whether the Sternwood's chauffeur, Owen Taylor, was murdered or a suicide. 'Dammit I didn't know either, " Chandler recalled. And Chandler later wrote to his publisher, "The girl who played the nymphy sister (Martha Vickers) was so good she shattered Miss Bacall completely. So they cut the picture in such a way that all her best scenes were left out except one. The result made nonsense and Howard Hawks threatened to sue... After long argument, as I hear it, he went back and did a lot of re-shooting."

So yes, revisiting old vaccines is a bad omen, but from my standpoint as a parent of littles, an important nuance and insightful stat are totally swamped out by this headline’s seemingly deliberate, inflammatory phrasing

But committee did vote 8-3 that the
combined measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (MMRV) vaccine is got recommended before age 4. They said children in this age group should receive the measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, vaccine separately from the varicella vaccine. Varicella is the virus that causes chickenpox.

About 85% of children currently get the
MMR and chickenpox vaccines separately for their first dose, according to data collected by the CDC. About 15% of kids get a single dose of the combination MMRV vaccine.

Discrepancies on how to implement the agreement - which was not put in writing - leaves some of the tariff measures still unclear.
Japan insists it secured a U.S. commitment that, for items with an existing tariff rate below 15%, the total duty including the reciprocal tariff will be capped at 15%. For items with an existing tariff above 15%, no additional tariff will be imposed.
That promise was absent from an executive order signed by the president on July 31, which shows only the European Union enjoying this more favorable calculation. White House officials confirmed to Japanese media on Wednesday that the Japanese rate will be determined as published and not by using the EU method that caps some rates at 15%.

Idk if this is unintuitive to people (replies to this post say yes for a lot of people), but this quote is 100% true. Beer gardens were absolutely third spaces for people in their earlier days in the US. Been their function since the beginning and it made them a ripe target for prohibitionists.

Oklahoma! has a lot of cool moments of chromatic harmony. “Pore Jud” has always struck me but this progression is kinda sneaky wild. Pretty smooth in context, an ambiguous voice leading kind of thing, but consecutive chords hailing the different whole tone scales is real striking.
