Blitz had his arms folded. “We pulled a lot of strings to make that work, Ami. You should be grateful.” I wanted to say it was good cops and bad cops. Really, now that I think about it, Blitz was as angry as I was when you caught your ex with that femboy. It wasn’t hard to guess he wanted to use me as a bayonet dummy.

Suppose I should have counted my lucky stars that I was the only one in Folsom’s library tonight. The librarian office was on the second floor of six, counting the ground floor. It was a carved-out slot of bare walls, chairs older than the oldest staff, and balsa wood desks that would crumble by a couple of years. The stuff the students used had a few extra toothpicks of reinforcement. Being alone in that box hid how far I’d fallen into a pit of can’t-be-fucked.

It was supposed to be an easy gig while I worked on my thesis: steady pay, residency apartment, free access to study materials, and opportunity to stay on afterwards. Cushy, quiet, unlimited free time; the dream job. Except there was one hitch. Cushy and quiet was perfect until you realised you needed something to keep your mind going.

Surrounded by fart-stinking beanbags and scuffed green and black carpets was a glorified solitary confinement. Night after night, it was the same oil-marked walls and gum pinned under the tables. It was enough to make anyone spew.

It was hard to tell which was worse: this, or the weekdays. I hadn’t touched my thesis in weeks. Lectures breezed past me. I wasn’t sure which convenors cared that I dropped in on their undergrad sermons anymore.
