A Meta data center was linked to water contamination in the capital city of Wyoming and the public only found out because … a guy running for state house may have had a Deep Throat From my @heatmap.news story today

City officials claim the water was tested before it entered the sewer and was missed, but there's a trust deficit between locals and
the government on what happened. Little of this information was public until a few weeks ago. Cheyenne residents first learned trouble was afoot on June 26, when the board posted a press release "reminding all residential, commercial, and industrial customers that the discharge of hazardous substances into the sanitary sewer system is strictly prohibited." Nothing was included about data centers at all; all the board said was that the bacteria was dumped by "an industrial user within the system."

Then Exie Brown, a Cheyenne resident and GOP candidate for state house, blasted a press release out on social media declaring
"a credible source with knowledge of the [board] investigation and sampling" told him the "industrial user" was a data center.
I reached out to Brown asking how he learned about this. His answers were cryptic.
"I was given a piece of paper with that name of a bacteria on it," he told me over the phone, declining to name the "very credible source" who told him about the contamination. "That it was released into our waste water system, that it came from a data center, that it was Meta, that they found out in February, and I needed to check into this." When I asked why the piece of paper, he replied: "Because they [the source] wanted to keep this quiet. Off the phones and stuff."

Are there lots of water use problems with AI and data centers? Absolutely. But it's worth considering we also live in a society that uses a lot of water, including for power, and reducing AI water use requires more power, which means water. From my @heatmap.news story today.

When you zoom out further, water use by sector shows that U.S. data centers are not the leading driver of water use and its scarcity to date. Thermal power (fossil energy) and agriculture are by far the largest users of water in the U.S. economy, and it would be challenging for the data center industry to ever catch up. Industry figures collected in 2015 found thermo-electric power used roughly 132.4 billion gallons of water per day. Irrigation was a close second at 118 billion gallons of water daily. By comparison, researchers have noted International Energy Agency estimates that the entire global data center sector consumed a comparable amount of water during all of 2023. These are pre-AI boom numbers, but they tell us a lot about relative scale.

A lawsuit challenging Idaho’s transgender bathroom ban in K-12 public schools could end soon, after a group at Boise High School suing over the law dropped the case.

The move came after a transgender student who was part of Boise High School’s Sexuality and Gender Alliance died by suicide, and another stopped attending the school, the group’s lawyers wrote in a legal agreement reached Wednesday requesting the case be dismissed.

Axios reporting today that Trump will use Cold War-era powers under the Defense Production Act to support the coal industry

President Trump plans to announce nearly $700 million in new federal support for coal-fired power and coal exports later today, Bloomberg first reported and the White House confirmed to Axios.
Why it matters: Trump officials are looking to revive the electricity source that has long been declining in the U.S., and coal production has also been mostly falling for almost two decades.
Driving the news: He's slated to announce support with authorities under the Cold War-era Defense Production Act.
• It gives presidents powers to try to bolster private industrial production deemed vital to U.S. security.

police retaliation against data center protestors? an alabama law firm claims their client was targeted by birmingham city police for filing a class action lawsuit against the approval of a data center some of my reporting today @heatmap.news

1. Jefferson County, Alabama – A law firm is alleging that police in the city of Birmingham retaliated against a woman for suing developers of a data center. It might just be a wake-up call for data center developers.

Earlier this month, two individuals each with homes next to a proposed 300-megawatt data center in Birmingham filed a class action lawsuit against developer Nebius and the city of Birmingham. The lawsuit alleges “multiple independently fatal zoning violations” rooted in the city’s decision to let Nebius’s project move forward while also finalizing a moratorium, and claims the city has granted approvals in violation of the existing moratorium.
On May 18, days after the lawsuit was filed, lawyers for one of the individuals – Madelyn Greene – wrote the Birmingham Police Department stating officers pulled her over while driving through the proposed project site without any lawful reason. According to the letter, which I obtained and was first reported by AL.com, the officers claimed she was harassing police and started filming her while in her car. When she took her own phone out, the officers “abruptly broke off contact, returned to their vehicles, and left the scene.”
