Took a minor break from Spielberg's ouvre to revisit a film I felt occupies the same period and vibes as the Indie films and 1941 and yeah Russel Mulcahy is soooo underrated its nasty ..
Hadn't seen E.T. since I was a kid, certainly not a favorite, but not bad, not bad at all. As always with Spielberg you get at least a couple "You big heightened genius you!" shots. The man knows how to shoot spectacle and more importantly how to make you feel it..sometimes to his own detriment..
This entire sequence (which I cant fully play) should be required study, for all who seek a career in action, (if any such ppl exist anymore). A masterclass in where to draw the eye, how to edit with intention, and of course how each action sequence can and should function as a story of their own.

Weve talked about Fords vaudevillian, Chaplin-esque physical comedy before but not enough about how his physical expression (facial) is also an ancestor of that era of actor/comedian. Cannot convince me you couldn't slap this bit in B&W and convince some tht they're watching a silent era actor.
An actor could go a whole legendary career and not have a character intro as good as this. The initial action of nails on a chalkboard, the abbreviated way of speaking, Spielberg's crawl into him...lightning in a bottle.

Glenn Plummer tho?? Absolutely gross how under the radar that dude is because that guy went. Theres a focused intensity to his work tht amwsy comes through and his contributions in things like Speed (comic relief) and Trespass (Sinister blankness) showed range.
So much depth of field in Out of the Past, the sense of scale, relation, danger, oh and there's also great straight talk not only in word but action. The trees in relationship to the rocks, in relationship to the men, in relation to each other, constantly moving, shifting from to the other...
