Your place here has become clear to you. You are the sinew, the muscle, the ganglia of a larger creature. A creature that is moving now toward the shallows, soon to be birthed into the world above. You feel her touch in every movement, in every instruction. You follow without question. *How could you refuse?*

You are a single cell among a tangle of cell. This cell will not survive to see the surface. Every part of you accepts this reality. The beach above is littered with the bodies of other cells which did not survive. Many of those bodies were yours. Many more will be yours yet. a downer ending needs to be earned as much as a happy one. A lot of creators don't recognize how to make a good ending bc the ending is effectively your story's thesis bolded, underlined and highlighted - but it's common to feel like it's smothering to have to think about themes and not go on vibes

Thinking about "downer endings" and how often the reason they suck is because people dont set out to write the story of how something goes bad, they write a story and THEN articifially force things to go bad for the sake of having a downer ending more so than any narrative or thematic consistency

a story is an essay. The creator is making an argument on an idea or a point of view, and the plot is the supporting paragraphs to help you understand their perspective. do you have to agree with it? of course not. but a debate without well explained arguments isn't a debate, it's a waste of time
