You’d once have seen kids hanging out in this neighborhood after school. People grabbing coffee or dinner after shopping on main street. But then the Mayor took out the subway stops to accommodate the superhighway’s eighth lane.

Issue 140, which just came out, is the most direct about it but the whole current arc (which started in 136) is about a superhighway being built through Blüdhaven which has woken up weird urban legends by disrupting the city.

All those fancy places up in Avalon Heights that used to have lawns and trees? Most of ‘em have given up trying to keep them alive. It’s all tarmac now. Space for more cars. They went in with a soft hand in some places. A fist in others. But it was meticulous. They designed the highway to make life objectively worse for everybody who lives in Blüdhaven.

They talked about all this %$#@. ‘Ley liens’ and ‘sympathetic resonance.’ They talked ablut ‘psychogeographic mapping’ and ‘Bledin Geometry.’ But what they did was cut through inner city neighborhoods, rendering them unlivable. They turned Melville Park into a junction. None of that’s surprising, right? When rich people want space that poor people use, they just take it. It’s been that way since the beginning of time.

Condor is a good choice but I was trying to stick with northern European birds because I felt that was a better analogue for the setting and climate. I picked a red kite for now because there was something about the shape of the face that had the intensity I wanted.

People are also missing that the Green Lantern Corps requirement is NOT to have the most will. It’s to be able to overcome great fear.

Just finished reading A River From the Sky by @aijiang.bsky.social It’s beautifully written, just like the first half of the duology. I especially liked the dialogue interludes, which I found very poetic, and I continued to love the imagery of the world established in A Palace Near the Wind.

One of those days where I got an idea for a short story and immediately wrote about half of it. Hopefully I can manage to wrangle out the other half later this week.

Just finished reading this. It’s a fun, fast-paced addition to the resurgence of sword and sorcery we’ve been getting recently. Merynthia is an excellent setting and I really liked the protagonist and their journey. (And I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but what a great cover!)

Soft "remake" of the Hartnell era: mercurial, mysterious, dangerous Doctor, An Unearthly Child-inspired pilot episode, very few references to the show's past, everything feels perilous and weird. And there's going to be a stone age story, but (pre)historically accurate.
