“Another shocking instance of Bosniak demographic opportunism, wherein the temptress Azra seduces the innocent Franjo, leading him away from the Gospel of Legitimate Representation towards the sinful trickery of the European Convention of Human Rights,” Dragan Covic, probably.
12:00. The piercing sound of sirens rings throughout Sarajevo as the capital and its inhabitants come to a stand still to remember the victims of the Srebrenica Genocide, and the broader Bosnian Genocide. Today, we grieve the dead. Tomorrow, we organize for the living.
Today we observe the global day of commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide perpetrated by Belgrade’s proxy Serb nationalist forces in July 1995. Many Bosnian scholars, above all at the Srebrenica Memorial Center, have written extensively on the subject. As such allow me only a few brief points:
Not much of a final score line a but a lovely evening at the Grbavica grounds all the same, watching tournament hosts BiH take on Poland at the UEFA Women’s U19 Championship. Terrific seeing the growth of the women’s game in BiH as compared to even a decade ago too.
I’ve written about the extraordinary demographic collapse of eastern Herzegovina, i.e. eastern RS entity. This shocking map puts that in stark relief: the red areas are settlements with pop of just 1-100 people. The brown areas have 0 inhabitants. The price of decades of Serb nationalist rule.
Bosnia very much adopting a “smoke ‘em if you got ‘em” strategy to tonight’s Qatar match.
Belgrade wasn’t even the only city in Yugoslavia to be bombed by the Axis during the initial invasion. Here is a scene from Sarajevo from April 1941, following the first Luftwaffe attacks, showing extensive damage near the Ashkenazi Synagogue. What a ridiculous lie.
New Vucic WWII revisionism just dropped. The Germans were bombing large swathes of Europe during 1941, e.g. The Blitz. The only genuinely unique aspect of the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia was that Belgrade was the first city outside the occupied USSR to be declared fully “cleansed” of Jews.
Incredibly, the entire senior leadership of Croatia is offering profuse condolences over the death of the American-born neo-fascist terrorist Julienne Bušić, who along with her husband and three others, hijacked TWA 355 in 1976, leading to the death of one NYPD officer.
The entire Bosnian Serb secessionist delegation which met with Putin today in Moscow was under US sanctions until Oct 2025. A couple million in lobbying dollars spent on Mike Flynn, Rod Blagojevich et al, and they’re sanctions-free — with not an iota of political moderation.
A beautiful evening in Zurich. I’m looking forward to presenting at the launch conference of the Institute of Slavic and Eastern European Studies at the University of Zurich, and discussing my book “The Bosniaks” with the Bosnian Students & Academics Association.
Dr. Robin Books spent 21 years as a US Foreign Service Officer, including a posting as Special Advisor for Europe to VP Kamala Harris. She reflects on her experiences and the evolution of US foreign policy on the next episode of Balkanomnicon. Begins streaming on Friday.
A short excerpt from my conversation with @faisalalyafai.bsky.social of @newlinesmag.bsky.social about the intimacy of the violence committed against the Bosniak community during the Bosnian War and the Bosnian Genocide, and the long term consequences of the same.
One immediate ask BiH’s MFA and presidency should make of the new govt in Budapest is the closure of Orban’s faux “counter-terrorism center” in Banja Luka, which is no more than a liaison office for his regime’s support for Milorad Dodik’s secessionist adventurism in Bosnia.
One of the strangest and most disturbing moments during Orban’s long tenure was the period in 2018 during which he was repeatedly photographed - including during a meeting with Italy’s Meloni - with an enormous ethnic map of Bosnia. This coincided with a sharp uptick in his government’s support…
During Trump Jr’s visit to BiH this week, during which he spoke at an event organized by the Kremlin-backed Serb secessionist regime in Banja Luka, he also sat down for an interview with Boris Malagurski, a prominent regional conspiracy theorist, Bosnian Genocide denier and Russian media mainstay.
Illinois-based Judson U. to host Kremlin-backed Bosnian Serb secessionist Dodik, who was under US sanctions only a few weeks ago. Uni boasts about "Standing Up for Democracy" while hosting the world's most prominent Srebrenica Genocide denier. Truly vile. www.judsonu.edu/the-world-le...
A few days ago I had the opportunity sit down for a chat with my friend Drilon S. Gashi about his remarkable journey from the Kosovo diaspora to the diplomatic service of the Republic of Kosovo. Amb. Gashi is my next guest on Balkanomnicon, presented by @odgovor.bsky.social. Streaming soon!
Critical bipartisan initiative by @shaheen.senate.gov, Sens. Tillis, Grassley, Durbin et al urging Trump admin to restore US sanctions vs. Kremlin-backed Serb secessionist Dodik. Letter provides pithy account of Dodik's continued threat to Dayton & why US law compels admin to restore sanctions.
The facts of Michael Flynn's most peculiar foray in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which appear to have significant political and legal ramifications both in Sarajevo and Washington.
A photo finish in Slovenia, with PM Robert Golob's ruling Freedom Movement just edging Orban-Dodik ally Jansa's SDS by 0.50%. The seat distribution in the National Assembly, however, is challenging for Golob and Jansa alike; unstable govt or even hung parliament likely.
I want to again thank everyone who has been listening to Balkanomnicon but especially the smattering of listeners in Ukraine. Seeing this little sliver of data genuinely made me quite emotional. I hope these conversations provide a brief moment of respite for you, friends.
The U.S. intel community assesses that Russia is still supporting the secession of the RS entity in Bosnia. Yet the Trump administration lifted sanctions vs. Milorad Dodik and his entire secessionist regime last Oct, with little justification. Congress should demand answers.
