This is either ridiculously uninformed journalism or outright pandering to fossil fuel lobbyists. Either way @telegraph.co.uk should be ashamed. Large parts of Europe are literally on fire. People are dying. Renewables are cheaper. Significant action on #ClimateChange is necessary and inevitable.
Clouds of insects above the wildflower meadows at RSPB Bempton last night. Lots of Seven-spot Ladybirds and other wee beetles that seemed newly arrived from the continent, as well as flying ants. Happy Swallows.
Fires in the fields down the road here this evening. Still so many local commenters insisting there’s no link with the weather or climate change. We’re really approaching the reality of this meme.
Grass cut ridiculously short for no reason now baked dry by the heatwave. Could have been an easy win: an oasis of food and habitat for declining insects, retaining water in heat and floods. Instead representative of widespread failure to adapt to the climate and biodiversity crises.

I’m a gardener who delights in having my plants eaten by ‘bugs’: here are 2 Large Rose Sawflies (Arge pagana) sawing a rose to lay eggs and a Mullein moth (Cucullia verbasci) caterpillar on a mullein plant. All are welcome! 🙂 #ifyouplantittheywillcome

A pair of displaying Gannets at Bempton Cliffs this week, for #SuperSeabirdSunday. Male on the left, female on the right, as became clear a short time later.
I was lucky enough to witness these Pardosa wolf spiders yesterday, engaged in a very cautious and lengthy courtship dance. They both ultimately disappeared into the grass, so I’ll never know the outcome. But I’m told the females very rarely eat the males, so🤞🕷️
I’ve been seeing a lot of ‘wtf is this?’ posts about Bee Flies on social media the last week, so I was delighted to finally see at least 3 in the garden today. Bombylius major. Amazing picture, I know 🙂
Please think twice about encouraging this kind of thing if you see it. Birds of prey do not like to be handled by strangers. They do not like to be stroked, and this is actually bad for their feathers. Owls should not be tethered. Note the obvious stress caused by the presence of dogs. 1/
