I was back in one of my happy places today at Handley High School in Winchester Public Schools. We looked at research and beliefs of a student-centered math class and discussed small tweaks we can make to our class to help increase engagement and achievement. These teachers are amazing!

Sometimes all a student needs is a sentence frame and the right manipulatives. This beaded rack supports thinking. The frame gives them the words to explain it. Putting sentence frames and manipulatives into stations means kids who used to stay quiet start explaining their math out loud!

Hiding the manipulatives in a cabinet? Bad move, friend. Keeping them out and accessible builds student discourse, deeper thinking, and real understanding of the math! It can be as simple as bins everyone can see and reach :)

I saw this on a school visit & it stuck with me. Teaching isn't just math or science or history, it's helping students shift their mindset. It applies to us teachers too! The way we talk to ourselves about our teaching shapes how we grow and help our students to do the same!

Every June, the list appears – fix this, rethink that, finally figure out that one unit. But you just completed another year of one of the most crucial, challenging jobs there is. If tasks call, do one thing a week. Sustainable beats heroic. You can't pour from an empty cup! Rest and reset 🙂
