I am ELATED to share this article I have been writing since 2015. I was a graduate student at UChicago while organizers fought against the closures of schools across Chicago. I theorize how Black Death emerges within neoliberalism. Available at Journal of Urban Affairs. doi.org/10.1080/0735...
This is #marfansyndrome. My daughter had her first Marfan Syndrome related surgery on Monday. Surgeons corrected the curvature in her spine which was obstructing the full use of her lungs. She went into surgery at 6'2" and she is now 6'4" tall.
It's #DisabilityPrideMonth and I am reflecting on the ways my body and how people perceive it have shaped my everyday life. In this piece, I reflect on what I call "compassion resentment," or the cost of being cared for as a Black disabled woman. Read the article at Jennmjacksonphd.substack.com.
I received news yesterday that my #Substack is officially a bestseller. This is kind of cool and maybe you should subscribe! Jennmjacksonphd.substack.com
I have been navigating an AuDHD diagnosis since November. And, it has sent me into a state of grief for all the past versions of me. In this reflection, I seek to hold it all, the good, bad, and in-between of being an autistic Black woman. Read the article at Jennmjacksonphd.substack.com.
Y'all. I just found a message on IG from a coworker from Disney who I've known for nearly 20 years. She bought five copies of my book and is donating them to libraries in all the places where I've lived!!! YALLLL. My heart is full AF. Sheesh. 🥹🥹🥹
My daughter is having her first Marfan Syndrome related surgery this summer to correct a severe curvature in her spine. She has scoliosis which is common for folks with Marfan's. We're lucky to have had care early on to diagnose her at 3 years old. This is Marfan. *image shared with permission
Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, and C+C Music Factory are slated to perform at the "Great American State Fair" celebrating 250 years of America and Milli Vanili said no. Milli Vanili yall, lol.
Today is the day! Having emergency eye surgery to save my vision. #MarfanSyndrome #disabledbaddie
Mother's Day is so complicated for so many of us. Those of us who have lost our mothers. Those of us who are estranged from our mothers. Those of us healing our mother wounds. I'm honored to be a mother despite not having one in my life. I wish us all love and peace today 💜
Y'all might be sick of me today! I've only worn my regalia once since graduating from the University of Chicago in 2019. It was to stand with students protesting the ge'noh-side in Gaza. Today, I get to send some of those Black, queer, radical students off into the world to disrupt and f*ck shyt up.
My son just sent this to me from his group chat 🤣🤣🤣 they made my family the face of admissions. I'M HOLLERING.
ATL is treating me so well. I'm in the field conducting research with Black organizers for the next book. I'm also facilitating focus groups for the Abolishing Patriarchal Violence table at M4BL. One thing I love is FIELD RESEARCH. I'm thankful my body has healed enough for me to get back to it.
I'm sharing that my vision issues have worsened and I am experiencing the risk of blindness. As such, I will need to have emergency eye surgery on May 19th. I'm scared. I'm sad. I'm overwhelmed. Marfan Syndrome is tough and mostly invisible. But the stakes are high. Please send love 💜
My final in-person book talk will be on Tuesday evening at Barnes and Noble in Emeryville on Bay Street (@bnemeryville). This is special to me as I am ending my book tour back home in the Bay where it all began. I would love to see some of the hometown homies at this event.
Last night, I was awarded the inaugural Scholar - Activist Award by the LGBTQ Caucus at the Western Political Science Association Annual Conference. During my acceptance speech, I explained that, for Black women, we are rarely recognized while we are living.
My FINAL book tour stop for BLACK WOMEN TAUGHT US will be on Friday, April 3rd at 6:30 pm PST at Libelula Books & Co in Barrio Logan, San Diego, CA. I am so excited to be ending the tour at home in the last place I visited when I left home for good in 2014. This will be a special one 💜
Okay, it's time to officially introduce y'all to my new baby: Pepper Precious Jackson. She's a four mon old labradoodle and a Scorpio queen. She likes frolicking in nature, chewing (everything), and sticks. She requires roughly 159 hugs each day. And sticks. All the sticks. We love her so very much.
I'm excited to share my newest article at Global Black Thought from the African American Intellectual History Society. "Fury and Disrepute: Black Women's Feminism in Lawless Times", a reflection on #VengeanceFeminism by Kali Gross. doi.org/10.1353/gbt....
I was finally able to articulate my feelings about the BAFTAs. It has been tough watching people respond without thinking about the impacts to Black disabled people. As a lifelong disabled person, my feelings about solidarity have changed over the past few days. Jennmjacksonphd.substack.com
