I am ELATED to share this article I have been writing since 2015. I was a graduate student at UChicago while organizers fought against the closures of schools across Chicago. I theorize how Black Death emerges within neoliberalism. Available at Journal of Urban Affairs. doi.org/10.1080/0735...

ABSTRACT
On August 17, 2015, 12 Black organizers launched a hunger strike to keep Walter Dyett High School open in Chicago’s historically Black Bronzeville neighborhood. It proceeded for 34 days until organizers surmised that their deaths would not be deemed significant to their political leaders. Considering this outcome, this article asks: how does Black Death emerge in a neoliberal city? I argue that the deaths of Black people—especially the poor—are inherent to the neoliberal systems within which many Black residents live. Moreover, I argue that Black Death operates not as a subtext for the struggling infrastructures and state-based frameworks in densely populated metropolitan areas but instead as an ever-present reality of the neoliberal city. I place the Dyett hunger strike in context with the 1995 heat wave in Chicago and the broader history of machine politics in the city. By theorizing Black Death in the neoliberal city, I offer a critical theoretical contribution to the neoliberal urban politics and policy literature. I posit that Black Death rarely moves governments toward restorative action to redress economic and social disparities in Black and poor communities. Rather, it is often Black and poor people themselves who resist the neoliberal turn.

This is #marfansyndrome. My daughter had her first Marfan Syndrome related surgery on Monday. Surgeons corrected the curvature in her spine which was obstructing the full use of her lungs. She went into surgery at 6'2" and she is now 6'4" tall.

My daughter is having her first Marfan Syndrome related surgery this summer to correct a severe curvature in her spine. She has scoliosis which is common for folks with Marfan's. We're lucky to have had care early on to diagnose her at 3 years old. This is Marfan. *image shared with permission

I'm reminded every day that my work and existence matter 💜

I have an 8yr old child who is actively navigating their identity, leaning toward nonbinary these days. this article on "black womanhood is inherently nonbinary" gave me language to give to her/them and I am grateful for that. So I just wanted to encourage you that even though "I hate that I am writing this to explain my gender experience to other people. It feels a bit like a betrayal. I should be able to identify in the ways that feel most comfortable for me." the work you do reaches even to our little babies and allows them to be a bit freer than we were 💙
