#SumLov My meetings seem to lean more on fantasy plot elements. In Fear the Wood, our heroes are at war with the fae, and if they don't know it yet, the faeries do. In Throneless King, Aro has been tricked into breaking into what he doesn't realize is a magical prison

Mateja had just gotten past the first row of trees when he thought he heard voices. People talking quietly just out of sight. He slammed to a halt, a shard of misgiving piercing him and tearing through the dozy pall that had numbed his sense of wariness. He crouched against the closest tree, hoping to make himself less visible. He was wishing he wore armor or his sword, all of which he had doffed when he went for a swim and not put back on. “Hello?”
Nothing answered him, which came as a relief. The voices—What he had thought were voices had fallen silent, and he told himself it was nothing but the wind teasing the evergreens. Keen to get out of the accursed, spooky wood where he wasn’t supposed to be and back to his friends in the safe world of humanity, he turned around.
But the forest did not come to an end a few feet away like it had when he entered.
He spun in a circle, heart hammering. All he saw was the boles of trees stretching in every direction. A gust of wind froze the perspiration on his skin, and he shivered.
By the time he’d turned around again, the wood had changed. He was no longer surrounded by pines and spruce but broadleaves, bigger and older than anything he had ever seen. Giants that had taken seed hundreds of years before his people migrated to the region. It could only mean one thing, and he swallowed hard against the fear that choked him.
“Well, well. A visitor!”

He had been making some attempt at stealth; he hadn’t lost sight of the danger this impetuous pursuit might put him in. So it was only when he arrived in the open doorway that the man became aware of him: he spun around, then staggered back with a ragged gasp until the wall could prop him up. “Are you real?” he demanded.
There was an interlude when Arosenna simply stared at him, unable to react. It had been a weird question, but that wasn’t what had rattled him. He could not know how old the man was, other than: older than him. It was hard to tell with elves since they hit a point where they were at their fullest size and strength, the last traces of puppy fat burned off their cheeks and a measure of wisdom accumulated in their visages. Then they just stayed that way indefinitely. This, too, was not what had scattered his thoughts like a dropped bag of marbles.
The man was so handsome Arosenna couldn’t stop gaping stupidly, even as a voice inside his head was screaming at him that this was rude and he was making a fool of himself. His heart fluttered frantically while his eyes ran across the precise shape of the man’s pointed, symmetrical nose, tracing his shallow cheekbones like a caress. His skin tingled as if it felt a breath of wind, and a tense knot coiled in the pit of his belly as he admired the precision of him. The man’s sensitive lips quivered as some thought passed through his head, and Arosenna’s eyes went back to them.
At last, though, he managed to get hold of himself and said, “Yes.” If his voice was a trifle throaty, he had his reasons.

He raised a hand, staying her train of thought. The suspicion was natural but not accurate. “It’s not interesting, so far as I can tell. They rose fast, but I can’t discover any unusual reason for it. It’s not honest or moral, don’t get me wrong, but it’s the standard double-dealing, skullduggery, and despicable profiteering that is how everyone who has money gets rich. At no point did they get creative about it.”
She twitched angrily but had the good sense not to attempt to defend the honor of her ancestors. “No supernatural bargains, for example.”
“Precisely.”
“Where does that leave this city?”

“Here,” his companion said, drawing him over to a three-story structure of yellow brick with a cobbler on the ground floor. Sunny’s first instinct when he saw the shoes on offer was to scoff. Why would you invest expensive, colorful materials on something the purpose of which was to come between your feet and all the dirt and filth you walked through? Then a pair of low leather boots of a startling turquoise blue caught his eye, and he bit his lip as he admired them.
“Yeah, I know.” He blinked, dragging his attention back onto his companion. When the man saw him looking back, he nodded to the shop. “It was a bad choice of apartments, the temptation is appalling.”

Walked over to the river today. Just 1 big guy on the turtle logs at Sunken Garden waiting for the sun, but saw a bunch on the opposite bank. Fun fact, you used to be able to see Sears Tower in that angle down the river until the trees got too big.

It's that time of year again when lillies attempt to consume the city.

The first two mugs, though, did not go to their guests but to Sunny and the guy across from Tarasu. It was confirmation of what he had begun to suspect, but Sunny hadn’t picked up on it: he toasted the man cheerfully to show his gratitude, although he didn’t drink, waiting politely for everyone to be served. It was just as well because Tarasu wasn’t letting either of them ingest anything these people handed them, and he’d rather wait to say so until both of them were in his line of sight.
When the next round arrived, Tarasu took his drink with a word of thanks and set it down in front of him. He had the suspicion there was no point continuing this interview, but Sunny said, “So. Your neighbors. What can you tell us about the time around when they left?”

#WIPSnips 'convert' no convert but this passage has 2 synonyms Have I mentioned the MC of the new story is named Sunny Disposition?

He’d been lost in the rhythm and looked up, startled, when he heard a voice hollering his name. Nel stood on the far side of the wood slat fence, and she was waving a basket at him. When he set his rake aside and went to her, she passed it over. “Lunch for you!”
He took it from her with a word of thanks, although he couldn’t remember this had been mentioned in their negotiations over his rent. He couldn’t tell if she was this generous with everyone or was being nice to him because she had liked his story. Maybe even felt bad for him. Depending on how you chose to view it, he was rather a sad and tragic figure, although he was trying very hard to shift the narrative. Make it a different sort of story. One where a series of unfortunate but unavoidable circumstances led the hero to make some changes for the better.
