D-Day, the Allied invasion of France during World War II, was the largest seaborne assault in military history.
10,000 American Soldiers lived and trained on the North Devon coast, a coastline that closely resembled the Normandy beaches where they were soon to land.
Here at Baggy Point, units practised cliff assaults from the sea and used grenades and live fire on
'dummy' pillboxes. Events here prepared troops for the historic capture of Pointe du Hoc, a cliff-top German fortification.
The remains of concrete pillboxes are still found along the headland, if you look closely.
This historic and naturally important site is now looked after by the National Trust forever, for everyone.

Rhythm
The artists of these two paintings each use colour and painterly gestures to convey feelings of rhythm or movement. In both, the figures seem to merge with their environment, suggesting the embodiment of rhythmic sensations.
In Nasema Nawe Michael Armitage (born 1984) explores the "Baikoko" dance and its shifting status in East African countries. Traditionally danced in all-female groups within Muslim communities, it subsequently became popular in contemporary culture and appeared in music videos.
Armitage's title (meaning '1 am talking to you' in Swahili) comes from a song by Tanzanian pop star Diamond Platnum (born 1989). Featuring a form of 'twerking, the dance was banned by the Tanzanian state in 2015.
Armitage made his painting to draw attention to issues of censorship and the repression of freedom of expression.
In her painting, Victoria Morton (born 1971) evokes the pulsating music of trailblazing electronic composer Daphne Oram (1925-2003).
Oram co-founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1957 where she created sound effects and otherworldly scores to dramatise radio and television productions. Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001) later created the iconic Dr Who soundtrack there. Oram invented Oramics, a process for synthesising sound by drawing shapes directly onto flm. She commented:
Once the composer can write without the limitations of performance his palette is extended enormously... Rhythms become anything the composer can visualise... Timbres have no registration and theoretically any sound, musical or otherwise, is within his grasp.
