Please enjoy this photo of adorable neighborhood ducks as a palate cleanser after a heavy-duty-ish movie musing.

Two ducks swimming in a creek - maybe they're mallards? I am not good at duck identification. The male duck has the classic mallard look with a spot of blue on the wing. The female duck is brown and has a similar blue stripe on the wing. I hope the ducks will pardon my gender assumptions about them.

Gorgeous PDX weather, took an afternoon walk to the park:

Found out that the Astoria Column gets decorated with holiday lights and you can visit the park at night. It was very foggy, which was cool and not at all creepy or scary.

However, *this* place was 5 minutes from my Austin house and I got really spoiled by the proximity of charbroiled burgers. (It's still there. Burgers are great, fried chicken good, get the onion rings instead of fries though.)

OMG I had forgotten I had this photo, from the HELLBOY II preview screening in Austin in 2008. This is my own photo (I have a whole set of 'em from the evening). I don't remember why everyone on stage got milkshakes but it sure was adorable.

We went to the Tualatin Giant Pumpkin Regatta today and watched folks racing one another around the lake in actual pumpkins, dressed as witches and Disney characters and also Sophia from Golden Girls (who really kicked butt):

Tualatin Giant Pumpkin Regatta: a half-dozen enormous pumpkins, rowed by people in various costumes I can't identify, are moving across the lake. A crowd is gathered along the shore to cheer them on.

An appetizing photo of a four-slice homemade cheese pizza -- the "sauce" is crushed tomatoes from the backyard. The pizza is on a cutting board, resting on a patio table set for two. That was one tasty pizza, I tell you what.

I just realized my feed is nothing but politically charged reposts right now, so please enjoy this photo of all the tomatoes I cut off the single (huge, Audrey II-esque) plant in my backyard yesterday. Look at me! I grew tomatoes! A year since we moved here and who knew we'd have tomatoes.

quite a few small tomatoes in a plastic container, what we used to call Tupperware. Bigger than cherry or grape tomatoes but still falling short of the platonic tomato size. I assure you they are little taste explosions though. I mean, dang.

But it wasn't the last movie we saw in Austin ... after the moving truck left on the day before the plane trip here, we had a free afternoon and an empty house and were at loose ends until we remembered this at AFS (I should wait until the day, but I'll forget and why break up a good story?):

Reminded that a year ago (yesterday) we went to the Paramount in Austin and saw what we intended to be our last movie before we left the city: WHAT'S UP, DOC? in 35mm w/an intro by Robert Rodriguez. Absolutely the best possible choice for a last movie/venue -- maybe -- anyway, here's a photo.

Probably this classic, bought used for under a dollar (I don't know how it's survived all the years/re-reads). I doubt my parents knew what I was reading, since my mom was fussy about keeping me from her bestsellers. You should maybe be old enough to have had a period before you read this novel.

Of all the things I never expected to see, a duck strolling up in my front yard this morning was ... not even on the list, because it was that surreal. But also adorable! Hello, duck friends (probably visiting from the nearby creek). Stop by any time.

Patio when it started snowing 24 hours ago versus right now -- it's a lot of snow (if you're from the Gulf South, anyway). Very pretty but I'm not driving around Portland today.

Last night we ate ice cream in this place and NO we didn't time travel, it was about 10 minutes away from the house:

it's a video rental store! there are shelves and shelves of Blu-rays and especially DVDs for rent on big racks. Yes, this is 2024. Also small tables in the forefront where we ate ice cream, because it's also an ice-cream parlor.

WOW y'all my wife repaired the Chumby and now we once again have the coolest living room clock EVER and I am so thrilled. (We spent the weekend putting up wall art and it is all terrific but we sure missed our Chumby.)

Chumby, which is what we had in the early 2000s instead of a tablet, set up with a Star Trek display theme to prominently show the time and date. It's on top of a tall speaker in our living room where we use it instead of a clock because it's awesome.
