And we began to publish the novels of Lou Mathews, starting with SHAKY TOWN.

I wrote a bold manifesto.

When LODGE 49 ended I wanted to do keep doing something positive and put good things in the world. I started TIGER VAN BOOKS.

We cast Lou in the Season 1 finale. He plays "Lou" in the scene with Lou and Tommy. Tommy plays "Tommy."

Lou's early encouragement and continued friendship started me down a path as a writer that eventually led to the impossible series of flukes that allowed LODGE 49 to be a thing in the world. Que sera, brah.

Lou's book was the uncompromising work of a native son, an eastside hood who knew the score and seemed intent on writing a love letter to doomed knuckleheads everywhere.

However, when I read his (criminally) out of print novel L.A. BREAKDOWN, I felt like I had known him all my life. In his elegiac tale of illegal street racing in the late sixties, Mathews captured the essence of working class Southern California in a way I had never seen before.

When I signed up for the class, I didn't know who Lou was. I didn't know that he had worked as a mechanic for twenty years before getting into the "quality lit game," as Terry Southern once put it.

So every Tuesday night I fought my way up the 405 to take a class at UCLA Extension taught by a guy named Lou Mathews.

On a whim I decided to take a fiction writing class. I wasn't thinking about a career, I just had an urge to get down some of the things I was feeling. Plus I loved books and wanted someplace to talk about them.

Twenty years ago I took an adult education class that changed my life. At the time, I was working at a plumbing supplies warehouse in Gardena and living in Long Beach. I drove a Saturn Ion.

It has been an honor and joy for Tiger Van to bring Lou’s work to a wider audience. For those of you just discovering us, I’d like to tell you a little about Lou Mathews and the road that led to LODGE 49 and TIGER VAN BOOKS.
