On this day April 30 1975. One of the defining moments of my life as a reporter. Witness to the end of the American backed war in #Vietnam. If only America - fifty one years later - could end its ill-conceived military adventures which do little but destroy people's lives.

Every year at this time memories come flooding back of events in #Vietnam on April 29 and 30 1975 and my decision to stay on to become one of the few Western reporters to witness the communist North Vietnamese take over of Saigon. Scenes of April 29th below:

We have arrived in #China. Moved on from the last month in #Japan Here for six weeks. Coming from Japan, China seems frenetic. Still unbridled energy. My last visit late 2024. Look forward to meeting 老朋友 in #Beijing and travelling to the southwest to see some new sites and old sites once again.

Here in eastern Kyushu - there are some remarkably pretty hills, gardens, walks, views. My latest #Japan visit is coming to an end next week with great memories as always.

I am currently visiting Japan. Good to be back again. Watching reaction to Japan's first female Prime Minister. A professed admirer of the late Margaret Thatcher, Sanae Takaichi takes on a tough task as longtime ruling party support is shrinking especially among younger voters.

Lazy late Sunday. Heading to Asia across the Bering Sea. Sharing a great natural wonder seen in #Alaska: the Hubbard Glacier. Global warming is alarmingly causing glaciers to melt and disappear. But Hubbard is a rare exception. Not retreating but still advancing... despite losing mass by calving.

One of my hopes going forward is to visit places at peace where when I first visited them, they were at war. So, this week I am in the city of Split- Croatia's second largest. When I was here on in 1992-93, it was base for British UNPROFOR military operations. Dark days then. All tourism now.

The late #Cambodia leader Norodom Sihanouk took Cambodia-Thailand border conflict to International Court of Justice - Preah Vihear temple case. ICJ ruled in Cambodia's favor. Sihanouk, who I met several times, once told me Cambodia always felt "squeezed between Thais & Viets" - 2 powerful neighbors.
