and a drink to subdue all the noise
the heart makes, swinging

all the sharks of the ocean
coming to the smell
and you machine gunning them, churning the ocean up red, crazed, drunk, not realizing
you'd turned it all into
a feeding frenzy

from a bird landing there on a branch of collarbone
hopping between the strung tendons of neck,
and noticing too
that the body was singing the same as a bird carrying notes down
convex lines, muscle,
drawn into you by a thick edge
of charcoal thumb
that loves shape, the ridge of vein and you, in the catching,
peel fabric
away, delighting in the gentle
pull,
revealing the way a lover
reveals the loved
to themselves
thighs and arms caught and
held,
arm matching the tectonic shape
of a hip then capturing it all
the bird singing there at the edge
of your lips

At 11:59 p.m., there is no mountain. There is only dark.

A sheet of night seasoned with local flashes and detonations that carry their reverberations up and down the neighborhood blocks like children running.
Everyone watches the time, shifts in the cold, looks west. At 12 a.m., the mountain appears. A single peak, held between icy fingers, pulled from above by a few soft detonations. Pink, blue, white. Each shatter, their pieces shooting gracefully in different directions as if with purpose, and long seconds later we hear their shattering from far away. A death echo that is felt in the chest. More detonations, more pieces rushing off with intent, and it occurs to me that these bits of temporary fire do have a purpose: to be beautiful. Nothing more can be asked of them. Nothing more should.

I hope whatever you feel, it feels like that. Temporary fire over a mountain in the frozen dark.

Excerpt of text from the author’s short story “Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho.” It reads:

The Devil sipped at his wine this time. Examined it. Gave it an exaggerated swirl.

"Do you know why women, when they leave you, they leave for good and why men, when they have a woman, they don't want them until they're gone? How sometimes, when you love someone, the only proper thing you can think to do is destroy that love? To rend it limb from limb with your little fingers and then wonder why and never know?" He pointed at himself. "That's me. I am everything about you God can't reconcile."

He sipped again.

"People want me to be holocausts. They want me to be lynchings. Tragic chemical fires. Nuclear meltdown. War. Endless war. That is not what I am. Those things are far bigger than me but if I am so many holocausts it's because you are too. And if you are so many holocausts, so is the Father. And He can't reconcile that."

He finished the wine.
