Today I am going to make pesto out of this basil I grew from one small basil plant, with walnuts from the giant tree just out of sight of this basil. Very excited to continue to use up the 44 pounds of walnuts (!) I gathered in my yard two years ago

The school has violated Portland City Code for years — specifically, Title 18 Noise Control, Chapter 18.12. The school only recently obtained a noise variance with the Portland Noise Office (basically, permission to play music for a fixed set of days and times). Their current variance allows them to play music from 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM on Fridays. They are amending it to begin 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM on Fridays and are not supposed to play music until that amended variance is approved. Today’s event beginning at 8 AM, and with speakers much larger and louder than their standard music, is in violation of that variance, as are any other events with amplified music unless you receive a flyer in the mail alerting you of a new variance. When their current variance was approved, they did not circulate flyers to all affected houses, as required by the code.

Your best actions of recourse are: 1) contact the Portland Noise Office through the form on their site, 2) email Paul van Orden with the Noise Office who oversees the Sabin variance, and 3) email Raddy Lurie, PPS area director and co-applicant on the noise variance (he tends to be more responsive than the Sabin principal, Michael Diltz, who is the other co-applicant). The variance is up for review in April 2025, and complaints from community members of violations throughout the year carry weight.

Per the variance, the school is required to document all complaints and the steps they took to address complaints and submit them to the Noise Office. Thus far, they have not done that consistently to my knowledge.
