Hannah Arendt did not get everything right - her writings on Black civil rights in the United States are embarrassing - but when she was right, she was right, and she sure was right about Zionism.

“There is very little doubt about the final outcome of an all-out war between Arabs and Jews. One can win many battles without winning a war. And up to now, no real battle has yet taken place in Palestine.

And even if the Jews were to win the war, its end would find the unique possibilities and the unique achievements of Zionism in Palestine destroyed. The land that would come into being would be something quite other than the dream of world Jewry, Zionist and non-Zionist. The “victorious” Jews would live surrounded by an entirely hostile Arab population, secluded inside ever-threatened borders, absorbed with physical self-defense to a degree that would submerge all other interests and activities. The growth of a Jewish culture would cease to be the concern of the whole people; social experiments would have to be discarded as impractical luxuries; political thought would center around military strategy; economic development would be determined exclusively by the needs of war. Under such circumstances (as Ernst Simon has pointed out) the Palestinian Jews would degenerate into one of those small warrior tribes about whose possibilities and importance history has amply informed us since the days of Sparta. Their relations with world Jewry would become problematical, since their defense interests might clash at any moment with those of other countries where large numbers of Jews lived. Palestine Jewry would eventually separate itself from the larger body of world Jewry and in its isolation develop into an entirely new people. Thus it becomes plain that at this moment and under present circumstances a Jewish state can only be erected at the price of the Jewish homeland.”

Takes some chutzpah for pro-Israel influencers to deploy Hannah Arendt to dismiss non-Zionist Jews, given that if Arendt were writing today, they would unquestionably be calling her self-hating and deracinated for her critiques of Israel and Zionism.

Beautiful words. Here's what they cost him: nothing.

Because look at the fine print. This is a man who won't say whether Israel should exist. A man whose response to an attack on a synagogue in his own state was "hurt people hurt people." He loves Judaism, minus the half of world Jewry who live in Israel, and minus the majority everywhere else who feel bound to it.

And he's found Jews willing to accept those terms. A famous actress who says her obligation "as a Jewish person" is to distinguish Jews from Israel. An influencer with millions of followers who campaigned for him. A beloved singer in London whose podcast began around a Shabbat dinner table, and who spent the war posting against the Jewish state while her audience held up antisemitic signs.

Hannah Arendt had a name for these Jews. In 1951 she called them "exception Jews," the ones nineteenth-century Europe would accept on one condition: be a Jew, but be nothing like the other Jews.

She also saw the trap, and this is the part I can't stop thinking about. The exception proves the rule. The Jew who accepts the role of the good Jew is signing a statement that the bad Jews exist, that they're the majority, and that the hatred aimed at them is fair. He hasn't escaped antisemitism. He's endorsed it, with a personal exemption he doesn't control.

The assimilated Jews of Germany had war medals, professorships, even baptismal certificates. When the mood turned, every exemption was revoked at once, and the lines they had drawn between themselves and the "wrong" Jews meant nothing.

The entry fee has changed. The door has not.

I'm sure these people see themselves as being on opposite sides politically, but they're both making the same essential argument - the idea that Israel-Palestine needs to be the lens through which to view every conflict worldwide, so Ukraine can't possibly be treated differently for a good reason.

Ben Shapiro probably does not know enough history to even know this, but the way he is talking about Muslims as a nation within the nation who can never be integrated is almost verbatim what European nationalists said about Jews in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
