Got some work so calling this warrior token done. Been meaning to paint an otyugh before now. In 2018 I did an ink drawing fan art of Nicholas Eames' Bloody Rose and always liked the pose/attitude of the piece so this was a chance to revisit that (altho no longer fan art).
I remember Mark Poole used to use something like this attached to a stand on his table. And it could swivel to be portrait or landscape.
Still available for work! Maybe you like the creatures and characters on blindingly white background genre. I can do that too! Art for Beadle and Grimm's, Kobold Press, and Monte Cook Games.
With Wacom no longer supporting my 9yr old Cintiq, I had to get a new display and decided to gamble on a Xencelabs 16. So far the quick keys remote is really nice.
Because of the theft machine I don't post many process shots anymore but here's the end of a colored pencil+marker stage. Now will be jumping to oils.
If you saw my earlier post and thought, "but Joe I don't want to commission sad art! I want happy art. You should do more smiles! " First, that's rude but I actually do do smiles and they're super normal ones!
I'm also great with the "immobilized women" genre. I don't know what sort of client needs that but I'm here and wouldn't it be crazy if you are too. Unfinished (about making art) and Stasis (about anxiety).
How about some more melancholy! Horseless Rider and Riderless Horse and Fall. Looks like I got the mood right for doing some album covers for some Noah Kahan type music.
An older series about creating art (minus the middle piece) and two pieces about cycles and sacrifice. This is all to say I think I'd be pretty locked in on the vibes to illustrate your sad boi tiefling OC. You want some melancholy? I can serve ya a big helping.
Currently looking for illustration work. Need a baobab tree oozing freaky golden sacs of fae? Need the festering body of a rotten good perched on webs and crawling with tarantulas? Need something shiny or melancholy? Contact me. Mecha and midsized sedan briefs need not e-mail.
Work has been slow. Doing a lot of little paintings in the meantime. 5"x7" acrylic goblin shaman mixed with redcap done for fun.
I hate seeing this kind of garbage. Like it's written by an AI-prompter. Not looking for art or an artist but looking for a coattail to ride and a cheap knock off of a LIVING artist looking for work. Which also means they hope to pay you next to nothing.
And this alter trying to replicate my Heroes of the Realm card.
Forgot to photograph several but here are some of the other screentone sketches from Vegas.
Accidentally brought the wrong panel to PopCon so now it feels like I'm in the GenCon art show 😂
Got some new markers to test for signings.Ohuhu wiped right off cards. Zeyar were too transparent.Chalkola were nice and somehow dry in 40 seconds.ArtOwl were low opacity and needed 2 minutes. Grabie's were great being very opaque and quick drying. DSPIAE markers on their way to test soon.
Really interesting misprint came by today. Never seen this greyed out and missing foil effect.
Flying out to MagicCon in the morning where I'll be setup in the Art of Magic area next to Jeff Miracola this weekend. Wish me luck! First time daring to fly with some originals.
Today I'm working on an acrylic painting for an angel token. Hoping to start offering tokens soon since that's the most common request I get (not angels necessarily).
What I eventually found was that you do acrylic then use a mix of water+modeling paste+matte medium before any attempts with colored pencil. After any colored pencil layer I had to use workable spray fixative. Then I could do an isolation layer with gloss and gac200 before more acrylic painting.
Lightningwing. 12"16" acrylic and colored pencil piece done just for fun/figuring out some things with acrylics. I was doing the isolation layers using gloss+GAC200 but then it wouldn't take colored pencil. And if an acrylic surface would take colored pencil, paint or medium would smudge it.
Mind into Matter, Growth Curve, and Geometer's Arthropod originals and preliminary sketches added to my site. Unsubtle Mockery will be added next Friday. Really enjoyed painting all my thumbnails for this set on MtG cards. www.joeslucher.com/products/ori...
And it's gone. Will be open to hearing offers on acrylic originals for Growth Curve, Mind into Matter and Geometer's Arthropod Friday and will have photos and dimensions. The Arthropod has a glow added digitally so a little different.
My art for Arcane Signet for Secrets of Strixhaven is out now. Members on my site can see the process for the oil painting. It will be in the store to non-members in a week. The same will go for other MtG cards and my originals.
If you see this, post an eye 👁️ An oldie but still makes me laugh.
Tip for MagicCon attendees getting signatures. More of us artists have to switch to oil based pens so get something like this to put your cards in so they can dry while you walk to the next artist.
