The smarter (or at least more self-preservationist) will at some point understand that the rest of the world will not continue to allow this to go on forever without retribution to the guilty. We’ll see how long it takes, though.

Just another great line that stopped me in my tracks for a moment (hitting maybe a little too close to home but also feeling seen) - researching and writing perhaps only for “communing with texts and imaginary interlocutors.”
Then - these two passages are key - we all need to slow down, think and write and (yes) publish with less immediacy if the enterprise of knowledge and discourse is going to survive. And do it in the context of *specific topics* - whether it’s Victorian poetry or, say, John Steinbeck studies.
She then does something that people in this sort of space need to do more of - perhaps fraught for those employed by institutions but therefore all the more essential for those outside it - name the problem, directly and with proper nouns. It is Trump and his party that is vandalizing our society.
First a point of personal privilege - this is me! To an absolute T, almost scarily what my own efforts (if you can even call them that) consist of. Although it’s missing “briefly over a beer on the train at the end of the work day before child duties start again”
Pretty much the only guy that saw it coming *and* actually took decisive steps to set his organization up to fight it.
