John du Bois (He/Him)
@johndubois
Brain injured game designer who pays bills as an SLP. Avatar of Cheese Masculinity. Board games, sewing, LEGO, books. This Machine Helps People Use Their Voice. I'd like a hard boiled egg.
Well shit, WotC might have finally found a way to force me into making a paper Commander deck.
Stay inside today, Detroit. The smoke from Canadian wildfires doesn’t recognize international boundaries.
Shirt 38: The Detroit Industry Mural at the Detroit Institute of Arts by Diego Rivera (front side is the south wall, back side is the north wall) Frankly, I have no idea why a shirt like this (collared shirt with full bleed art of the murals) isn’t on sale in the museum gift shop
Shirt 37: A rainbow dragon scale pattern shirt to wear to Pride later this month (button close up included because I think it’s extra pretty)
Sometimes you get done designing a fabric pattern and just go “holy shirt this slaps I can’t wait to see it in print and get it on my body”
Every time an elected official from Michigan says that Chinese cars are going to spy on Americans, I immediately wonder: 1. Are American cars spying on Americans? 2. Wouldn’t the American government spying on Americans through their cars be a bigger threat than the Chinese government doing it?
Memorial Day? I guess. But it’s also the Glorious 25th of May! #gnuterrypratchett
I worked on shirt design for the first time in a while today The core vocabulary board shirt is just a silly one for work I think the Detroit Industry Mural one might get me stopped by strangers in public almost as often as my bookshelf shirt does
Last night, ran my daughter and her D&D group through their first boss fight. It was good to dig through my board game upgrades and LEGO for terrain and minis again.
I… think this is good news? @davethegame.bsky.social, is this good news?
Like this is fine It gives a dollar amount, breaks it down by type of donor, and then lists the organizations that have donated If you give enough of a shit to dig more precisely than that because you think JAC is more than just pro-Israel, it gives enough info to do more research yourself.
Hello I am a happy watermelon and I want to make more happy watermelons
Shirt 35: Another “my kid’s in a show” shirt, this one’s for my daughter playing Gurgle in Finding Nemo.
The screenshot you share describes Below Level 1 Literacy as defined by the study the screenshot is likely describing (the 2023 US PIAAC). This, copied from the website of the NCES, who administers the study (nces.ed.gov/surveys/piaa...), defines Level 1 literacy.
Today’s the 89th anniversary of the end of the Flint Sit-Down Strike, which led to GM recognizing the @uaw.org for the first time. I remembered to wear my shirt with images from the strike and plug my game about it, Striking Flint, on the actual date this year. hollandspiele.com/products/str...
I finally had some time to think about why all the commentary on Trump’s press conference bothered me and write it down. The short version: The President is a shitty person, and we’re not going to change that about him. We need to choose whether we let him and his shittiness change us.
Rather than talking about what people did or said, I’m going to do what I should have done in the first place, which is share my thoughts on treating games as merely the sum of their parts
Shirt 34: A speech therapy themed shirt. Waveform “stripes” from a recording of me saying “everyone deserves a voice”. Then I painted the words on the shirt because, after this past month, fuck subtlety
Chalking it out before I paint. I need to be more intentional on the lettering on the first word, I think.
I’m doing fabric cutting tonight for a shirt that has a pattern of a sound wave of me saying “everyone deserves a voice” And I gotta say the temptation to get some paint and write it in all caps on the back is rising right about now
Really enjoying making the move up from making clothes to designing my own fabric. My kiddo’s playing Gurgle in Finding Nemo, so I designed my own royal gramma fish fabric
“You keep asking why your work is not enough, and I don’t know how to answer that, because it is enough to exist in the world and marvel at it. You don’t need to justify that, or earn it. You are allowed to just live.” -A Psalm for the Wild-Built, Becky Chambers
Yeah this is kind of where it’s at Trumpism used this manufactured nostalgia for how things used to be, and the Dems fought it with promoting the present or the immediately pre-Trump past But that gave up on the idea that lots of things still need to be better And we need *progressive* energy
I feel like this centralizing question needs to be accented by Matthew 7:15-23 regarding false prophecy.
