Too easy! 4-1! Great start. 1 win off the leaders but not a big worry this early in the tournament. Feeling good!
Today is a monumental day!! July's Sumo basho starts, meaning it's Hoshoryu time! LFG.
This was an incredible sumo match between the two leaders of this basho. WOW.
Jaishawn Barham is a HAMMER vs the run, whether it's from off-ball or on the edge.
He routinely false steps (picking up his front foot first, rather than rolling off it) out of his 2-point stance, which dampens his get-off. Luckily, he's quite explosive through Steps 2-4, but if he can clean up his get-off, it will really unlock his ability to threaten with speed.
Hoshoryu with another dominant victory! Still controls his own destiny for the basho. Has some tough bouts coming up, but I believe he can do it! LFG!!
Against the run, he's does a good job with his pursuit angles on perimeter runs and he's not afraid to throw his body around to maximize hitting power. He's a little small (listed 5-foot-11 and 190) but he's not afraid of physicality, though you don't want him taking on lead blockers anytime soon.
He does his best coverage work in zone concepts but can struggle in man coverage against route runners with some wiggle.
Thompson also shows really good awarness and feel for routes developing around him. Has more than a few plays where he'll peel off one route to disrupt at the catch point.
Think he can also be effective doing things around the box. Does well to identify the PA and chase down the flat route for minimal gain.
From a coverage perspective, I think he does best when playing top-down, so he can drive downhill on targets. Regardless of where he aligns, his best reps come when he can drive downhill & play through the WR's top shoulder. He can get into trouble when he's in trail against better route runners.
And with that, here are my new EDGE ranks with combine testing adjustments. Still can see some movement from these 11 after pro day testing round out their athleticsm scores, but we are getting close to finalizing these ranks!
