It’s the only viable one they have here really. If they throw the kitchen sink at it and still get roundly beaten it looks even worse. It’s also nothing to do with Badenoch (awful as she is) the last mayoral election was before she was leader. This was their candidate speaking back then.

Andy Burnham will tell schools across England to adapt their curriculums to the needs of local businesses as part of a devolution drive aimed at tackling the jobs crisis for young people.
By moving decision-making to local areas, the PM hopes the plan will make technical and vocational skills as valued as academic qualifications - and help cut the benefits bill.

Asked how he hoped to balance any changes, Burnham said: "It's about changing the nature of the support and making some of the support conditional upon people taking opportunities that are presented in front of them.
"So you might increase the conditions required to receive benefits. I think it's a good thing that the government has given guarantees of opportunities for young people.

You are wrong to believe that. It's a common misconception that healthy people receive unconditional out-of-work benefits. They do not and have not for a long time. It's not difficult to find this information out.

Specifying your job
If you are expected to look for work as part of your Claimant Commitment, you will usually be expected to accept any job you have been offered that pays at least the minimum wage.
For the first 4 weeks of your UC claim, you can decide what jobs you want to apply for. If you have not found a job in your preferred occupation or sector after that time, you will usually be expected to look for work in any sector or occupation.

It is Burnham's first big speech as the presumptive next PM. Apparently he won't be taking questions from reporters because he wants the coverage to focus on the speech. It may turn out to be the most important political event of the week, and of course I will be covering it in detail.

Bad memory or derangement syndrome? Less than 6 weeks ago Labour under Starmer lost over a thousand councillors, many full councils that have been Labour since the dawn of time and an entire country in Wales. A winner he is not.

Labour endured a historic defeat, caught in a pincer movement by parties to its left and right. Its defeated councillors, many of considerable experience, are collateral damage, victims of an unpopular government and a divided party at Westminster.
The scale of Labour's dreadful performance is plain to see. It lost 59% of the seats it was defending, slightly better than the 62% lost in 2025 but still the fifth worst rate for a governing party. Labour's near 1,500 seat losses accounted for 30% of the total seats
at stake, putting the defeats incurred by Harold Wilson's government in the late 1960s into the shade.

I'm no media expert but I suspect that riding into battle against the likes of YouTube isn't going to end well.

The far-right anti-Islam activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson, is due to be released from prison four months early.
His 18-month sentence for contempt of court was reduced after a hearing at the High Court on Tuesday.
Yaxley-Lennon was jailed last October because he ignored an order not to repeat false allegations about a Syrian refugee who successfully sued him for libel.
His lawyers told the court he had since shown a "commitment" to comply with the order. Mr Justice Johnson granted the application to have the sentence reduced because Yaxley-Lennon had shown a "change in attitude" since he was sentenced.
