this apartment complex down the street from me with hundreds of off-street surface parking lot stalls aren't going to get 12KW charging stations any time soon. plus the only game in town for non-tesla fast charging (250KW+) is always crowded and you gotta camp out for 30 minutes waiting to charge.

I would join the coalition to reform prop 13 in a heartbeat

There was a ballot measure to do a so-called split-roll reform of Prop 13 to raise commercial property taxes like you’re talking about. Why do you think you would be successful trying it again if you’re elected?

Well, I think, first of all, the issue is much clearer now. It was tried in 2020. It lost something like 52-48. I think this issue is much, much clearer, now.

But in addition, I have a history of winning these. And I think this is a very straightforward question where people are really suffering. We need this money. And I think that that is a case that California voters will jump on. And let me say this. Every time I’ve gone up against corporate-funded, corporate special interests at the ballot box, people have told me there’s no way I can win. No one’s ever beaten the oil companies. No one is ever going to beat the tobacco companies. These out-of-state companies, people are totally scared of. They’re going to win. I think California voters will see through that very, very quickly. This is just, you know, should Disney be paying real estate taxes on Disneyland based on 1970s value? No, that’s crazy. They’re a gigantic company that makes billions of dollars a year.

Have you decided how you would fund that ballot measure? Would you fund it yourself, or would you get together a coalition?

It would be a coalition. Look, my opinion about all this stuff is we need to have a coalition that shares the values about standing up for working people, we can’t be the richest state in the country with the highest percentage of people in poverty.

important update: I can understand the argument that a responsible property owner actually *should* do some regular inspections like these. Also if you find no damage you have to pay for it anyway. It's a risk you take where the benefit is that you find potential damage sooner rather than later.

hmmm, actually... after thinking about it for more than 30 seconds and trying to see it from different perspectives... I can actually sympathize with the argument that, as a property owner, you should probbaly perform these kinds of inspections anyway as part of regular recurring maintenance. Like how they say you're supposed to get your roof, water heater, HVAC system, etc., inspected regularly. If the inspection shows that there was a defect in the way ducting was installed that led to some other damage maybe the builder should be responsible for fixing the damage and redoing the duct work but not pay for your inspection because that's just something you should be doing regardless of whether or not there might be damage as the result of poor workmaship or whatever.

I dunno if I like this part. If my HOA pays for destructive testing to check for water intrusion and finds lots of water damage to the sheathing behind both the stucco and water resistent barrier then I would expect the builder to be responsible for both the repairs *and* the investigation costs.
