"Partly" says Stede. "One night, after the children were in bed, Mary asked me for the thousandth time why I was a million miles away, and I blurted out that I was gay! He’s not able to do much gardening, but he goes with Ed to the garden to keep him company. Stede sits near Frenchie, and they sing together. When Ed knows the words, he joins in, and those are the times Stede likes best.

He finds what he’s looking for, and his boots crunch across the gravel rooftop. He doesn’t stop until he reaches the railing, and then he sits down, his legs dangling over the edge. “Izzy! Izzy! Iz!” he calls out.

They reach the 17th floor, and Ed follows Stede into room 1717. Lucius is poking listlessly at what might be meatloaf. He drops his fork onto the tray with a clatter as he clocks Ed in human form.

“I found a friend of yours,” says Dr. Bonnet. “Anyway, I’m sorry your procedure was postponed. There was a…erm…hiccup with the scheduling. An emergency. Another patient needed emergency surgery, I mean…” He trails off. “I hope you’re not in too much pain today, Mr. Spriggs-Back, er, Black, sorry!” Ed is standing way too close, and Stede is visibly perspiring. “We’ll be doing your disc repair tomorrow, so remember: no eating or drinking after midnight.”

“Got it, Doc. I know the drill. My lower back hurts like a bitch, though. Any chance I can get some of the good meds?”

“I’ll alert your nurse and add it to your chart,” promises Dr. Bonnet. ”I have other patients to see, so I’ll let you two catch up.”

Stede leaves Lucius’ room and wipes the moisture off his face and thinks to himself, “Why am I so sweaty!?” He feels for his pulse, and it’s racing. He leans against the wall for a moment, closes his eyes, and tells himself to take a few slow, deep breaths.

Ed sees a quartet of buzz-cut-wearing teens coming toward him on electric scooters. He wishes he had one of those. His boots are not meant for long walks, and his feet are starting to hurt. The teenage marauders surround him. “Nice boots, dude!” says one. “Nice jacket, Mad Max!” says another. “Let’s get him!” says the third. “Yeah!” says the fourth. The next thing Ed knows, they are grabbing at him. He shoves the biggest one off his scooter onto the ground and makes a run for it.
He looks around frantically. The nearest building is a hair salon next to a convenience store. He dashes into the salon and runs through it, looking for the exit. He bursts out the back into a small parking lot, where he sees a woman coming out the back door of the convenience store. He runs past her and slips inside the store. He hides behind an endcap and peers around the shelves, looking through the plate glass window at the front of the store. He sees the teens gliding away, and he sighs with relief. “If that was fear,” he thinks, “I did not fucking enjoy that.”

At last, Stede turns off the main road and pulls up to a charming two-story cabin with no visible neighbors. There’s a bicycle on the front porch with a helmet dangling from the handlebars. Stede parks the car and gets out, and Ed follows him into the cabin. It has a big open area, and Stede points out the living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast bar, and powder room.
“I was just making a ham and cheese sandwich when you called,” says Stede over his shoulder, his back to Ed. “Are you hungry?”
Ed has no stomach for sandwiches or small talk. He can’t wait anymore. He reaches out and puts his hand on Stede’s upper arm. “Stede, please. Am I too late? Just tell me. Is Sam here? Did you get married?”

He spots a bus bench with a sign displaying maps and schedules of intersecting routes. He’s trying to puzzle it all out when a man approaches him. The man has long, stringy blond hair, and he’s wearing jeans and a jean jacket. But what stands out about him is the seagull perched on his head.
“Karl extends his regards,” says the man, in a Scottish accent.
“Karl’s the bird?” asks Ed.
“Aye, Karl’s the bird. I’m Buttons.”
“Buttons!” exclaims Ed. “Do you know Lucius?”

This time, Stede can feel Ed pressed against his back and Ed’s hair tickling his neck. Stede shuts off the faucet and takes off his rubber dish gloves. Ed follows Dr. Bonnet on his rounds, visiting an assortment of orthopedic patients, but when the doctor goes back to his office and busies himself with paperwork, Ed finds himself drawn back to room 1717. He enters without opening the door. The patient is sitting up in bed, channel surfing. He’s in his late 20s, with short brown hair and unusually long sideburns. He has accessorized his baby blue hospital gown with a jaunty red scarf.
The patient sighs and sets down the remote. “I can’t see you, but I know you’re there,” he says, speaking with a British accent. “What I don’t know is why you’re here.” His voice rises an octave. “Wait, I’m not dying, am I? I don’t want to spend eternity in a fucking hospital johnny!”
