This actually seems like some pretty decent advice. It's hard to exist right now. But I've been trying to do what I can to keep going. Even simple, small things can help. For me, it's spending time with friends, playing games, cuddling with my cats, and watching videos that bring me joy.

Daily "avoiding hopelessness" checklist

Hey, friends. I know I've been really struggling to look towards the future with any kind of hope, so here are some little things I've been trying to do every day that might help you, too.

• Accept that your productivity might look weird right now. Don't expect yourself to act as if nothing is wrong.
• Make art. I try to write something every day, even if I don't really feel like it, and I've found that once I get into it, I'm grateful I did.
• Do something to plan for the future. Doesn't have to be big. Even getting some ice cream you know future you will thank you for counts.
• Eat. Even if you're not hungry. I keep skipping meals because I don't feel like eating, and then I force myself to make something and realize I was absolutely starving.
• Clean up one thin in your space. If doing all the dishes and sweeping the floors and putting away laundry all feel too overwhelming, try just doing one of those things.
• Lean on your online and offline communities. I live in a county that voted Trump by a margin of eighty percent. My world feels scary and hostile right now, and it's my communities that are helping me feel hopeful.
• Try to find one thing that feels normal. One thing that feels safe and normal and helps you feel a bit more grounded. My local grocery store just got their shipment of chocolate oranges in for the season. That's my thing.
• Try to find one thing to look forward to, no matter how small. My thing is checking my ao3 inbox for comments on my fics.

Last week I went to a German restaurant for a friend's birthday, and I told my roommate we're going there and that it's the wurst.... took her a minute. 😆 Also, it was delicious. I had schnitzel with mushrooms and it was amazing.

It reminds me of this story I first heard while watching a charity livestream event. You can't make a difference in the whole grand scheme of things, but you can make a huge impact in small areas.

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking up and gently throwing things into the ocean.
Approaching the boy boy he asked: "Young man, what are you doing?"
The boy replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die."

The same thing goes for people's idea of protecting children, where instead of viewing children as autonomous beings who deserve equal rights, respect, and opportunities, they view them as property to protect from outside damage or influence so they will grow up to be the perfect version their parents wants them to be. Which is also very much not the same thing. Every time someone cries protect the children, it's about protecting the parents property from outside harm, not protecting the child's emotions and wellbeing.

Ah, yes... a woman's shirt with "he/him" on it. Wonderful. Now all trans men can be reminded you still see them as women. Walmart... I'm not even sure you tried. I know rainbow capitalism is stupid and shallow. But the fact so many companies aren't even bothering says a lot in our current climate.

It's crazy to me the author can write this, and instead of realizing the parallels we are seeing in modern-day USA, he just wants to talk about Hell.... I do believe in Hell. I just think it's earth-side and we're in it now. And so many people help make it happen and have no remorse for the harm.

The most hellish thing about the Stalinist purges (and there are plenty of candidates) is the climate of accusation, suspicion, and guilt by association that took hold, particularly in the military and the security services. It is often pointed out that the Hebrew word satan simply means “accuser.” When accusation takes over a society, it becomes satanic by definition.

As someone who used to pretend to be a dog, horse, and such when I was a kid, I assure you realizing I'm not a boy or girl was very different than when I played pretend. But, then again, bigots think being trans *is* playing pretend. But it doesn't make it so. It's most certainly different.

My favorite is when transphobes say "I identified as a dinosaur when I was six, kids that age are too young to know they're trans!"

Nah, mate, you didn't identify as a dinosaur. You didn't cry yourself to sleep because you couldn't figure out why you had no tail. You didn't feel an inexplicable sense of shame at your lack of claws. When you saw yourself in a mirror in a dinosaur costume, you weren't upset about al the non-dinosaur bits you could still see. When others saw the costume, you weren't brought to tears by them treating you like a child-wearing-a-costume instead of a real dinosaur.

You were playing make-believe. Kids do that. Kids also have genuine insight into themselves as no external observer can, and we should be helping them to explore that so that they can make better choices.

If your child told you that they were hearing voices, you wouldn't care that they were too young to understand schizophrenia. If they said that they had a wrenching pain in their gut, you wouldn't rage about "liberal doctors brainwashing children". Yet if a kid says "it hurts when people say I'm a boy/girl." Suddenly the idea of treating that symptom becomes a conservative bogeyman.

I like this take. I never got too invested in sports, but I definitely played with boys growing up and it wasn't a big deal. The idea that women are inferior at everything is just a load of BS. Transphobia and sexism are linked. Also, yes. Men and women aren't different species! Good grief!

My stance on the trans athlete debate is always and forever going to be that sports should be completely desegregated because humans have one of the smallest levels of sexual dimorphism in the animal kingdom and the disparity we see between male and female performance is entirely caused by social factors rather than anything biological. "should trans women compete against cis women" I think cis men and cis women could compete fairly but that's apparently a little too spicy for people to wrap their minds around bc they've been told their whole lives women are biologically inferior & never thought to question that or wonder if it's maybe a self fulfilling prophecy of some kind. Are women biologically inferior or do they appear so because patriarchy demands that of us?

When I watched the Barbie movie, it just made me want to be like a Barbie doll and not have any sex organs and the like. That would be great, actually. I'm asexual, non-binary, and don't want kids. I don't need any sex characteristics, thanks. It's something I wished ever since I was a kid.

I get that the barbie movie didn't show a lot of gender nonconformity or diversity with its characters outside of weird barbie and allan but the emphasis on barbies and kens not having gendered sex organs means that all of these very traditionally presenting men and women still don't meet the terf criteria to be a man or woman because it's an oversimplistic and reductionary way to define gender.

This reminds me when my mom looked up why she couldn't get her stitches wet after a surgery and the AI overview gave her this. This is why I have Google set to just Web, so I don't get the AI overview anymore unless I click over to "all."

Why do they tell you not to get stitches wet?

Stitch can't go in water because his extremely dense molecular structure makes him unable to float, causing him to sink rapidly, which is a major vulnerability despite his other incredible strengths. This is a key part of his design as Experiment 626, making water a genuine threat where he'd be helpless and could drown, as shown in the movies where he struggles to swim and almost drowns Lilo when they are in the ocean.

This is honestly a great take. It's always weird when transphobes say things like "you were born a woman" or whatever. And I know it's true for me. I didn't really question my gender until I hit puberty. No one is born a man or woman. Not even cis people.

This doesn't make a ton of sense to me either. Setting aside the question of whether gender/sex is assigned or observed at birth, the gender I was assigned at birth was "boy." The gender I have now is "man."
Boys and men have different gender roles, and few adults identify as boys anymore. From this standpoint, every adult has a different gender than the one they had at birth.

Framing "girl" and "boy" as separate genders from "woman" and "man" is such an amazing take. It's a framework that accommodates and explains so many trans experiences. Some trans people never were their AGAB. Some feel like they were their AGAB, but that that changed (usually when puberty hits, which is when you start "becoming a man/woman". The accepted societal path is that girls grow up to into women, and boys grow up into men. But some girls grow up into men, and some boys grow up into women. This guy was a boy who grew up into a man, which generally works out pretty well for people. Some boys and girls grow up into people who aren't men or women, even! It's like this random cis guy skipped right over transgender 101, 102, 201, etc. and stumbled directly into Transgender Nirvana.

I love the color brown. I also love yellow and it gets the same treatment. It's the color of the sun, flowers, bees, honey, and is typically associated with happiness and joy. But I think they are both some of the least popular colors because people can't get their head out of the toilet....

I grew up in a church that supported a lot of missionaries and Bible translators. And now that I'm no longer Christian... it really doesn't sit right with me. But I also partly know why they do it. They think Jesus will come back once all the world has the gospel. It's part of their death cult.
