James Burns
@jpburns
Somewhat grumpy comic book creator who lives in Athens, Georgia. I have prostate cancer, and have drawn a comic about it. Details on
I came across this post - tombrevoort.com/2026/07/11/l... …and found this unpublished Jack Kirby pencil page. I find it really relaxing to try to ink his stuff. Here’s what I came up with.
For folks who think the @ajcnews isn’t digitally aware… uh… you’re right. News from the past in a paid ad on Reddit this morning. Seriously AJC, why are you paying money for this? I really want to root for Atlanta to have a world-class newspaper, but they keep disappointing me.
Back in 1978, while I was in college, I did several postcards for my friends. Sitting around this afternoon, 48 years later, I thought I’d redo one, just for fun, while watching the World Cup. Much easier with digital tools. #procreate
I just tried this experiment with one of my pages. It’s weird… it’s like it’s drawn better, but doesn’t work as well in storytelling terms.
We’re big believers in sympathetic magic. If we prepare for the worst, it won’t happen. #athensga #iceStorm2026
Working on the last page of my new #comic. Just the pencils for the top 3 panels. More work to do.
Another day, another penciled #comic page. All about my latest PSMA/PET scan. Spoiler alert - generally good news.
Local clown Mike Collins can't spell the state he wants to be a senator of. www.newsweek.com/georgia-mike...
I went to see Fantastic Four: First Steps today. I walked out afterwards saying it was 90% of the Fantastic Four film I hoped it would be. Pretty amazing that a corporate Marvel film got it so close. The brief "Kirby in his studio" shot nearly brought me to tears. Blink and you'll miss it.
Working on page 39 of my latest #comic. I was proud of this panel, depicting the bouts of petulance and occasional anger I experience while taking ADT (androgen deprivation therapy). Not proud of the bouts, but like the drawing.
Watching #francevsgermany, inking and lettering my latest page of my #comic. Here's the bottom panels.
I've gone back to working on my comic about what happens after radiation treatment and you're awaiting the results, after nearly 2 years of #prostatecancer. Page 38, about planting banana trees.
Here’s a look at the crowd at the #goodtrouble protest here in #athensGA. #resist
Thursday there’s a “Good Trouble” protest here in #AthensGA, starting with speeches at noon at the ACC Library, sign-making, and then a march at Alps and Baxter. @50501movement.bsky.social (Here’s my sign)
Kirby used to emphasize words to influence flow and meaning. Not always successfully.
3 pages from my autobiographical #comic "A Life Half-Forgotten," about my favorite birthday, my 6th, 60 years ago! A true story (as true as any memories are...).
Here are the two added pages I included in my second edition of "The Death of Me?," about experiencing the eclipse while staying at the Hope Lodge.
What I was doing back in 2003. By the way, I'm wearing Alex Trebek's tie. @jeopardyofficial.bsky.social @kenjennings.bsky.social
Here's a page I've been working on for my latest comic. In it, I talk about all the trips Rebecca and I have taken over the past year (twice to France, and currently in Vienna), because, like I say, life is short.
