Just shelved this book, not sure if you’d be interested but thought I’d at least put in on your radar. A thorough cataloging of pop/rock music’s adoption of N@zi imagery for aesthetic and shock value reasons. It wasn’t the easiest read tbh but it’s important to have this all in one document.

Great movie and an amazing interview with John Waters focusing on the music, dances, and the Baltimore scene. I don’t want to spoil the whole thing but Waters had some very kind words for Dave and Gaylord at the end.

Glad we went to Paisley Park last year on our Minneapolis trip. Serious security (bagged phones, smart watches off) and limited photo ops but there was plenty to take in and absorb about the artist in effectively his home. (Plus I love how they commit to the bit in the last photo 💜)

JEAN THOMAS: Oh, not super heroes. The things that I grew up read. ing were the newspaper comic strips, and I renenber ay dad reading ne Prince Valiant.

JEANINE SCHAEFER: My very first sequential conics was Brenda Star, every day in the newspaper-yes, every day! The era where it was drawn by Ramona Fradon. I was obsessed with her.

JEAN THOMAS: And then, of course, Mad magazine. I Love Mad naga-zine. I mean, from the time I was old enough to reach it off the shelf, I Loved Mad magazine.

AMANDA CONNER: Yes, I did grow up reading conics. When I Lost ny first baby tooth, the tooth fairy gave me a Mad magazine and 3 nickel. That's my first menory of conic reading. Then, every tine I would get sick, ny non and dad would buy me Archie comics.

NANCI DAKESIAN: Growing up, I was an Archie girl. At that tine, they didn't List the names of the artists on the books, but I could tell the different styles of art. One of my favorite artists at Archie, who I got to actually work with Later on, was Dan DeCarlo. I remen-ber thinking that as a child, "Wow, I Love this," and then as an adult, "I can't believe I'm working with this person now." It was really a nice treat for me to cone full circle, actually be able to ink some of this stuff, and work with hin directly and his sons.

EVEL. EMING: I started reading conics when I was five years old.
I started, probably Uke nany people, reading Archie comics. It's funny, the novelist walter Mosley, a very fanous BLack novelist, said this thing once: Whenever you interview authors and you're Like, who were your early influences? They're always aT. S. Eliot and Tons Mornison." He's Like, everybody Lies. Because if you're celing the truth, people would say, I grew up reading Nancy Dren and the Hardy Boys. Because that's what people read!" And

actually feel similarly about comics, because as women in any kind of nerd culture, we're always asked to prove that we really know things and that we really belong. And so it's only nore recently that I can kind of come out as an Archie fan.
My mon brought home ny finst Archie conic book. I was five,
and she got it from the grocery store rack.
PREETI CHHIBBER: So I grew up on Archie comics. My parents are inmigrants from India. And ny mom really Loved Archie conics, so she would always have them in the house. So, then, I would always read then. It was just this really weird part of Anericana that infiltrated our very Indian immigrant household.
ROXANE GAY: I found Archie in the grocery store at the cash reg-ister. I Loved reading, and when I would wait for ay mon to finish with groceries, I would just pick up a comic, read it, and she would let ne get then.
I just Loved the interpersonal dramas between Archie, Veron-ica, Betty, and Jughead. And the town of Riverdale, it was all really quite wholesone.
There were a lot of little melodramas, but they were always really good-hearted. And I nean, they're really just good, fun stories.
EVEL. ENING: It actually taught me a few really important things.
Nunber one was that Archie had this recurning cast of charac-ters. The idea that there's an ensemble of people that cones back, and that there's the continuity, which is a Little iffy that's sonething that nakes conics different fron other forms of pop culture that I at that point had previously consumed.
And another thing that was interesting is they would reprint strips adlacent to cach othen, Bond that wond alasnly fare st different eras. I could tell the different ant styles. And so as

ROXANE GAY: Looking back, what the holl was I so obsessed with? Bue at the tine, I just thought that it was a lot of fun.
DECETI CHHIBBER• It never even occurred to me as being a strang thing until I was an adilt and thinking back to it. I was writing sonething for Book Riot and realized, Why did we have so nacy Archie conies in this household?*
Because it was a conbination of Archie and then these Indias folklore-slash-religious nythology conics that told various stories fron our culture and our religion. And so it was this bizarre nix of visual storytelling, but two very drastically different
KING-NA WEN: I always Loved comics, but the [ones] I was reading actually were a lot of Chinese conics when I was younger. Then that

conics. That was the first thing I always went to-the Sunday confcs.
BOBBIE CHASE: Growing up, I read conics. I was aware of super hero ardes, but I didait necessio pasd then. My brother and I would walk to our Local drugstore in the summentine to buy conscs. y
favonites were Archie and Richie Rich.
LINDA FITE: Nothing was more pleasurable on a hot sunner day than walking down to the drugstore near ay grandmother's house and buying an ice crean on a Popsicle and a couple of conies, which were, like, a dine when I was a Little kid.
