Parasitism reconsidered: far-right relationality and the rhetoric of Patriot Front

ABSTRACT
Taking an alternative theoretical route to the study of far-right and white nationalist rhetoric, this essay extends extant literature by attending the forms of relationality fashioned in the rhetoric of Patriot Front in order to make a more robust claim regarding white nationalist relationality more broadly. Such a focus on relationality, we contend, offers important lessons for scholars of far-right rhetoric, as well as for rhetorical theorists of the public. Specifically, we hope to extend Larson and McHendry's notion of parasitic publics using Michel Serres’ work on the semantic possibilities of parasitism as a way of theorizing human relationality and of assembling the public world. Doing so nuances our understanding of parasitism and relationality, suggesting that what should be of primary concern are the ethical frameworks of our relationality. While the relationality of Patriot Front and white nationalism more generally is hostile towards difference and premised upon a logic of linearity and identity, a radically democratic relationality might instead be based upon a logic of becoming and be thankful for and hospitable to difference. The theoretical ambit of the parasite holds room for both possibilities, demanding ethical choice on behalf of the public itself.

Michael Rogin once noted that it is tempting to “cling to instrumental rationality” to make sense of black suffering and death, in order to “defend against the horror at the center of [the] story.”23 Du Bois’s “public and psychological wage” thesis arguably casts antiblack racism in instrumental terms by stressing its role in a transaction that serves the ends of capital. Yet Du Bois also confronts the “horror” of which Rogin spoke. When he “sees through” white people, he finds them to be in thrall to the belief that they are “demi-gods,” driven by “ungovernable” rage, and inclined to take pleasure in black pain and death. These startling reflections on the irrationality of antiblackness urge us to face the most troubling features of racism in the United States today.

b/c the wages of whiteness continue to pay dividends

It must be remembered that the white group of laborers, while they received a low wage, were compensated in part by a sort of public and psychological wage. They were given public deference and titles of courtesy because they were white. They were admitted freely with all classes of white people to public functions, public parks, and the best schools. The police were drawn from their ranks, and the courts, dependent on their votes, treated them with such leniency as to encourage lawlessness. Their vote selected public officials, and while this had small effect upon the economic situation, it had great effect upon their personal treatment and the deference shown them. White schoolhouses were the best in the community, and conspicuously placed, and they cost anywhere from twice to ten times as much per capita as the colored schools. The newspapers specialized on news that flattered the poor whites and almost utterly ignored the Negro except in crime and ridicule. (Black Reconstruction [1935], 700-701)

This is funny b/c the neo-Nazis in Patriot Front hate Donald Trump. At best PF sees Trump as useful for pushing white nationalist rhetoric into the center of US politics. At worst, PF sees Trump/MAGA as controlled by Israel. Some PF guys like Avery Ruiz openly talk about harming Trump supporters.

Always great to talk to the amazing @philinvestigates.com about the violent white nationalists who join Active Clubs and what they are planning for our communities. Members of Active Clubs want more race riots in our world and they're learning that GOP officials want them too.

For example, I know of several Active Club members who are currently in jail for domestic violence in which they beat their partners, all of whom were White women. Leaders of Active Clubs don’t want anybody to know this because it will destroy their narrative about who commits violence.”
