Super eventful day at work. Delivered to the local orgy resort, which until last week I didn't know existed. Got rained on a bunch of times. Met some very good cats. And performed hospice services for this aging moth I saved from drowning at a gas station and drove around with all day

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since the day the world ended, gods in the machine should usually be obeyed—especially when they turn up offering salvation. I ducked.

Wanted to draw real bad. Brain said no. As you can see, it also said no last time. I thought I'd throw together a new pfp since my hair's changed, but I can't even draw my own face. Aphantasia and face blindness really suck sometimes

When my breath steadies, and feeling returns to my legs, I make my way to the master bedroom. The kind of person who lives in this house is the kind of person who sleeps with a gun under their pillow, and I hope to God it's still there.

Well. I'm still not sure what this development in my life says about the nature of the universe and higher powers. Is my presence in this universe proof of a god or proof against one?

Maybe I shouldn't think about it too hard. I've got a lot going on. I'll just keep my various supplications to myself.

What if I did director commentary for all my books in the form of a self-insert fic. What then

Besides, I have no idea if meeting her is allowed. Is dropping into your own fictional universe kinda like time travel, where you can't interact with yourself? I always say my characters are extensions of myself, but how literally would that be applied here? Is it like a video game, where I'm now the player character and relegated all the others to NPC status, the outcomes locked into a small handful of choices? Am I invisible to anyone heavily plot-relevant?

Or can I change the story?

I wiggle out of the booth, trying for a decisive rise and landing in the neighborhood of wobbly.

I know how I can get my answer, and right whatever cosmic wrong I've committed while I'm at it: I have to kill Samuel Anthony before his character arc ends.

Once again, @charliedeltawrites.bsky.social has me cracking open ellipsus because an #AwesomeCharacters prompt gave me an unhinged idea 😂

The only other solo diner pulls a book from their bag. My heart rises, then sinks. I know the author. More than that, I'm friends with them on Bluesky.

It could be my brain inserting things from real life into my dreamscape…or it's an Easter egg. And I know I love an Easter egg.

I cross the dining room and snatch the book from the customer's hands—if I'm in a dream, manners don't matter, right?—and skim over a few paragraphs.

They make perfect sense. Of course they do; the author is brilliant, and I don't say that just because they're my friend.

“The hell is your problem?” The customer grabs their book away from me. Their voice is familiar. Alarmingly familiar. I look down at them for the first time, and Sebastian Stan's face looks back up at me.

That's definitely an Easter egg.

Locating the source of the pain took several seconds in my sleep-addled state. Eventually I narrowed it down to my torso, then my back, in between deep, careful breaths to ward off wave after wave of nausea. A scream formed in my throat, held back only by my teeth clamped down on my lips.

“Which way to the bedroom?” It was the voice of a paramedic I’d never see again, her face obscured by time as she bent down to my eye level. “Where is she, sweetie?”

“No, not again.” My arms curled around my head like I’d always learned to do in case of tornado, earthquake, or active shooter.

We weren’t the only resistance shooting from a high vantage point, but we did appear to have lasted the longest. Maybe our stolen Ancorp gear had something to do with that. I steadied my hand on the windowsill and aimed for the nearest set of leather-clad legs.

Shooting at anywhere vital was a waste of bullets.

But even Ancorp’s armor couldn’t defend against trampling. Felling a soldier into the waves of angry, panicked residents doomed them almost as surely as a shot through the heart.

All I ever had was Leecie and I’ll probably never see her again. I know this is different from hiding at the fort, but I don’t…” His mouth twisted in rebellion against what he was asking it to say. No one wants to give voice to their deepest fears, least of all a traumatized teenager. “I don’t want to be alone.”

I pushed my hair back. Leecie’s love life wasn’t the most active; I knew that. She’d never dated anyone as long as I’d known her. There’d been offers, sure, but her response usually ranged from disgust to fury. Sometimes she seemed to resent being seen that way at all, and I couldn’t blame her—some of the men who came into her job were more than qualified to write the book on audacity.

So why say what she did at the marina? Why tell me she returned my feelings if she didn’t? Her lips had carried something other than friendship when they met my hand that morning. She’d said as much, and she wasn’t the type to lie.

#WIPSnips getting stalked by mercenaries outside your burning home is pretty adrenaline-inducing, and adrenaline is a helluva drug for Leecie (whether she wants it or not)

Only a few seconds had passed.

I pulled one of the tasers from my pocket, poked my head around the corner, and squinted to aim. Bullets immediately burned the air around me. One of them caught the end of my ponytail, still swinging with the force of my movement. The smell of burnt hair filled my nose. I fired the taser; to my satisfaction, one of the marching Ancorp agents fell in a fit of convulsions.

“Stand down!” ordered their comrade.

He had stopped to give the order: a stationary target. With a snarl, I loosed another cartridge on him and he, too, collapsed into a twitching heap.

“What the hell?” I whispered.

The soldier broke away from their squad. They spoke into their shoulder and strode up the sidewalk in my direction.

For a second, I let myself be paralyzed. I wallowed in the fear creeping up my throat—all but relished it. Finally, I had a reason for the gentle pulse of terror that had buzzed inside my head for days: I was about to be killed behind a fried chicken place.

I took several scrambling steps before I could break into a full run.

What had once been a bar stool now masqueraded as a nightstand, heaped over with an alarm clock I barely used, a book I’d never finish, a charging cable. And propped against the back, a photo of all my friends in a dollar store frame. I grabbed it, running my thumb over the bottom right corner where Luke’s nostrils took up most of the visual real estate.

We’re coming for you. I couldn’t say the words aloud, afraid speaking them might give irony more temptation than it could bear. But it was a promise all the same.
