on top of all of that, if that were not all bad enough, caine is revived! let me break down why this choice infuriates me so. caine and jax are both in scenarios that are considered effectively Dead. it is assumed there is no coming back for them. which one gets to return? the trans woman who just figured out her identity who now has a chance to live it out, or the fucking cisgender male AI character? of course the cis man, but not before the show really makes it seem like jax is going to be brought back from abstraction only to cut this off, and then just dismiss her entirely for the rest of the finale! you cant fool me, ive seen movies. you set up the perfect opportunity for the character then emerging from the light newly reborn, which for a trans narrative would have been a really cool literal metaphor!

again, i like a good tragedy! i am okay with the ending where abstraction is the end for all of those characters, if it were pulled off. it is just that with jax being disrespected in her death, the gravity of the situation that a trans woman died without ever getting to live as her true self except in her final moments not being realized, that then they have the fucking gall to go "and caine comes back and everyone lives happily ever after!" no! you cannot have it both ways!

i feel like i am going crazy from how many other trans women think this ending was gratifying in any way. it feels so insulting. we finally get confirmation that this character that for years is hinted at as being a trans woman, she is immediately killed and her death is seen as so trivial.

i am so much more disappointed because of how the part of the finale done before then is handled with such grace and passion. what happened here? why was jax's grave spat on at the end of it all, by both her friend and the story itself? there will be no outrage over this in the same way there was for the "bury your gays" trope, and this just makes me more depressed. thanks for reading.

bluesky character limit will kill me if i try just putting in text, so i am gonna post screenshots from my same post on this from tumblr (i am using she/her for jax, by the way. it is canon at this point. i do not fight me on this.)

lets start with the pacing. there is no way around it, the pacing in the finale is abysmal. i will say, it is mainly the beginning and end of the finale. the middle is actually solid, the pace at which the plot progresses during then does not feel so disjointed and rushed. the setup at the start feels too quick and then the end is wrapped up too quickly. i got mental whiplash at both of these (especially the end)

the overall plot is filled with such potential, but i have never been more underwhelmed and part of this was just the pacing of the finale.

next is pomni. i just do not feel as if her character arc was fully resolved. she definitely has growth throughout the series, and it is shown at the end, but something just feels... off. i think it is related to the elephant in the room i must address. the big ol pink, blue, and white elephant standing right there. i am going to say something controversial:

jax's trans narrative was fumbled. big time. i mentioned earlier liking the middle of the finale, and the entire middle is jax's trans arc. i liked what they did with it! it made me tear up, it was just so real! so you may be wondering, why do i feel this narrative was fumbled?

it was due to the entire ending of the finale. jax does not get respect after her death Abstraction. this is what i mean when i say i do not think pomni's character arc is fully resolved. we are meant to believe she has evolved and a lot of this is related to the other characters and her relationship with each of them. pomni when she enters the circus ends up making it her goal to fix everyone's strife. so when she resolves jax's acceptance of herself, it is such a heartfelt moment that feels so gratifying in both jax's character arc finally resolving and also how big of a moment it is for pomni's whole deal. then jax abstracts, and everyone is still referring to her as a man, and pomni never shares with everyone that jax was in fact not a man but a woman. this is why pomni's arc feels incomplete, because she absolutely blunders the chance to help her friend one last time.

do not get me wrong, i love a good tragedy. i would enjoy the story of jax's narrative ending with her death, and that in her death she finds out she was meant to be a woman and that somewhere in the real world is her actual self, who might be able to someday become the woman she could never be.

the ending of The Amazing Digital Circus does not properly present itself as this. only pomni knows the truth and never tells the others in the circus, and we see everyone's real selves out there living their lives and it is at least hinted at that the real jax might figure herself out soon, but that does not feel good enough. the whole thing leaves such a bad taste in my mouth. i think i would be absolutely livid if anyone who wasnt a fellow trans woman made this finale, and even with the creator being a trans woman i am a bit pissed off and very confused.

it is really funny that discord decided to do some extremely high effort bit for april fools complete with get a pop-up for the bit, supposedly thinking this was a ridiculous thing that would surely be parsed as a bit! but then everyone i know (including me) saw a pop-up when they opened discord about some shit and went "oh ok discord is rolling out a new feature i couldnt care less about and forcing me to know about it via pop-up. whatever" and dismissed it entirely like every other new stupid discord feature. i wonder if this is a good sign for how your userbase feels about your app
