Without accommodation that could host me for more than six months at a time, and without NSFAS funding or bursary support, I found it impossible to continue my studies consistently.
despite actively participating in churches associated with OM's network, I was never able to secure the accommodation stability required to participate fully in these programmes.
throughout this period, I continued applying for international exchange and leadership programmes, including opportunities with Bethel Ministries and OM Ships International.
At the same time, I undertook part-time work with the Graduate and Student Placement Department. Unfortunately, despite these opportunities, I was still unable to secure stable accommodation. The frustration was immense.
having participated in LoveLife programmes since primary school, I joined the Peer Helping Society at university. This involvement opened many opportunities, including employment as an Administrative Assistant within the University's Short Learning Programmes Department.
despite these challenges, I gained admission to study Information Technology (Software Development) at Nelson Mandela University, where I progressed to second-year level.
during my final examination period, I was preparing to attend initiation school while experiencing overwhelming mental fatigue and stress, all while being accommodated by a schoolmate.
i was also part of the Department of Education's Peer Educator Programme and received training through the Rutanang Peer Education 10-Lesson Plan curriculum.
this was also the year I reached my emotional and mental breaking point. i often felt as though I was operating on an empty tank. Yet, by God's grace, I passed matric with an average of approximately 60%, taking Mathematics, Biblical Studies, and Languages at Higher Grade level.
although my academic performance remained satisfactory, i still lacked stable accommodation. nevertheless, i participated in nearly every Mathematics-related enrichment programme available in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.
during the same year, i participated in the regional Thuthuka Mathematics and Accounting Programmes, as well as the DOE's Introduction to Actuarial Science Programme, which required learners to maintain exceptionally high academic standards, including averages above 80% in multiple subjects.
in my matric year, i was selected as one of the top-performing learners invited to join an Engen incubator school because of my strong performance in Mathematics.
twenty years ago, i applied for a student exchange programme. unfortunately, my application was unsuccessful because i could not obtain a recommendation letter from a community leader.
