A rough weekend: excruciating rib pain from coughing, an ER visit, and the Dove Wildlife evacuation. I’m so grateful Cal Fire got it under control. I’m home now, bronchitis worse and exhausted. A little beauty from a better day: a female damselfly in the front yard. #Damselfly #MacroMonday

The damselfly is slender and elegant, perched delicately on a thin stem above the green leaves. Its body is long and narrow, with a soft, muted brownish-gray tone and pale banding along the abdomen. The wings are held closed and extend straight back, appearing translucent with a fine dark tint near the tips.

Its head looks rounded and metallic, with large compound eyes that catch the light in a silvery gold. The legs are thin and spidery, gripping the stem lightly, giving it a poised, almost fragile appearance.

Juvenile pied-billed grebe in left-facing side view, floating low with its body mostly submerged and its neck angled forward. The bird is dark brown above with medium-brown sides, a paler buff to whitish throat and face, and narrow dark stripes on the cheeks and sides of the neck. The crown and back of the head are darker, creating a capped look. Its short, thick bill is pale gray and holds a bright red-orange crayfish crosswise, with the crayfish’s claws and legs extended. A small pale patch of rear feathers shows at the back.

Two dark, compact pied-billed grebes are swimming in shallow blue-green marsh water. The second grebe is farther left and has turned sideways while grabbing a crawfish in its bill; its head is low and focused on the catch.
