Legislation can’t manufacture romance or guarantee a family, but policy profoundly shapes the environments where these connections happen.

By thinking about how to relieve relentless cost of living pressures, reforming inflexible childcare frameworks and protecting public spaces, the state could provide a vital safety net to give people back the time, energy and emotional bandwidth to foster strong community cohesion. These changes are not radical but practical everyday areas of focus “closer to home”.

So you know that Summer Of Sex thing that Samantha Niblett MP has been working on? They did a call out for sex educators months ago and I've heard nothing. No meeting, no reply to my email, and no invite to parliament. Maybe it's because I'm not Instagram famous or that I'm too socialist

What are you currently doing around sex education?
I've been a sex and relationships educator since 1999 (I started out with the Derby City Council Specialist Youth Work Team in the Youth Service). I've worked in outreach, sexual health services, youth services, schools, colleges. I now mostly work online with my comprehensive RSE website BISH which is read by many thousands of young people and adults every week. I've been a self-employed educator since 2014 (as many of us are now). I also train practitioners in the field and create very popular RSE resources for use in workshops, to facilitate affirmative, fun, challenging, and inclusive conversations. I'm a member of the World Association for Sexual Health.

What do you wish you could be doing?
I wish that there was more funding. My website is one of the leading sources for high quality RSE in the world, many academics and practitioners regularly recommend BISH. However, I rely on crowd-funding and self-funding, which means that I am only paid to work on this for around half a day a week (when it needs to be more like a 2.5 day a week job at least). I know that other small organisations face financial difficulties in the sector and we have lost a great deal of expertise since the years of austerity kicked in. Cuts to local government in particular have been extremely damaging to the sector.

I would also like to be able to publicise what I do effectively, however this has become much harder to do in recent years. The deplatforming of sex educators and sex workers on social media platforms means that it is very difficult to reach young people with accurate, non-stigmatising, and feminist messages. Furthermore, the opacity of the Google search algorithm and the increasing use of LLMs means that it's getting harder and harder for young people to find sources of education and advice from professionals whose only aim is to provide high quality, free, ad free, advice written by an expert human.

What change do you want to see?
In addition to funding, there needs to be a clear cultural shift with strong leadership from the government. During the last parliament, people providing inclusive sex and relationships education and advice were demonised. In particular by former MP Miriam Cates, who commissioned a very poorly written report criticising, in bad faith, the work that I and other colleagues and organisations do across the sector. The Daily Mail, The Spectator, and The Times have regularly written articles with unfair and (frankly) libellous claims about my work. I have lost funding as a result of these cuts (and came very close to quitting altogether).

The Netherlands have consistently funded RSE and sexual health services, very matter of factly and without rancour. They see relationships and sexuality education, and sexual health services, as a public health issue and as a human right. For as long as I've been working in the sector, we have been calling on successive governments to take this approach.

Culture war and funding cuts have caused great damage to this country generally, but in particular support for young people and adults around sex, relationships, and themselves. Sadly I have been deeply disappointed in this government and if Reform become the next government then I can't begin to imagine how bad things will get. I will almost certainly have to leave the field entirely.

Tech giants need to be held accountable. They should be regulated, taxed, and required to be transparent and democratic in how they run the online world.
