CNY friends, the official book launch party is today in Oneonta, NY, at Gotham City Outpost at Southside Mall. I will be there from 4-6pm with loads of books, some rasslin mags & programs and lots of chatter about The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s, local film, local sports & more. Snacks too!
Ep. 100 of GK's Old School Rasslin' Talk is up! I discuss Tragos-Thesz week in Waterloo & all my new friends, old friends & next steps in writing @ rasslin'. Also I open up a lil @ my bout w/a thus far incurable auto-immune disease & how it changed my life. www.buzzsprout.com/1997141/epis...
My Tragos/Thesz experience in four pictures. Thank you to Tony Richards for the unique view and the great panel talk. Y'all hooked me. I will be back to Iowa for more.
There's ready and then there's pricelist for Iowa ready. Guess which one I am?
Long after people forget @ an internet ass or the try-out guys he was hyping, the world will remember Nick Bockwinkel as one of the best world champions & one of the all-time greats. But thanks for the stupidest iwc discourse since "Goldberg was a bigger star than Andre or Bruno"
In ep 99 of GKOSRT "USA 217" we discuss Austin Idol's 1993 vanity project which lasted 2 months. Part 1 looks at the truth in Jan 93. We might have been better off had it been 1983! Plus some good heels & a better logo. www.buzzsprout.com/1997141/epis...
Books are here! PayPal or Cashapp for signed copies. Free shipping if you buy an older book too. See you in Iowa July 9-11 and at Gotham City Outpost in Oneonta on July 18!
Houston Wrestling cover story for Oct. 19, 1962, about Ricki Starr's return to Houston. This is not long before he departs for London and his Eddie and the Cruisers life. From the letters I have read, Houston was excited for Ricki to return then surprised the crowds were not better.
New on the pod Ep 98 the Texas Rasslin' Edition where I kind of talk about my new book by highlighting the top 10 discoveries I made while researching The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s. Check it out here. www.buzzsprout.com/1997141/epis...
Exciting to hear initial The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s feedback. Here's something that fascinated me. Doc Sarpolis, for all his wisdom & machinations seemed to pick sides poorly. After betting on Ed McLemore in Tx & Johnny Doyle in LA, Doc left biz for a year before buying Amarillo in 55.
As heard on Tony Richard's Time Tunnel upcoming show on Texas 1976, pt 1, 50 years ago, June 5, 1976, the big Texas Stadium show kicked off a summer of giant rasslin' events. This is from the Tuesday show at the Sportatorium, so full go-home hype for Saturday's Super Bowl of Wrestling.
I should be selling books but life does things. My mentor Jerry Grey changed territories last week and his tag team partner Bob Cook and I paid tribute to our guy, the Golden Boy. Check it out here. www.buzzsprout.com/1997141/epis...
Accidentally No. 1 in e-book extreme sports this am. Paperback version out tomorrow. Thank you all for your interest in The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s. I think you are going to like it!
2 days til The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s is for sale! Til then please enjoy this Billboard ad for Texas Rasslin'
4 days til The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s is on sale. I keep thinking @ Dizzy Davis, 1 of rasslin's great cons. Tried to buck the TWA often. In the 1970s he masterminded jail break for 13 Americans from a Mexican prison. And did I mention his phony PhD & his bullfrog farm starter kits?
The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s is out in 5 days! The main tale is the 1952-54 Houston vs. Dallas brawl that began in San Antonio Dec 10, 1952. Why did so many things in rasslin' begin in San Antonio? Credit Dorathy (Dottie) Livengood!
6 days 'til the release of "The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s. Here's a classic Morris Sigel article f/1928. He was laid off as a clerk in a lumberyard so Morris became a partner in brother Julius' Gulf Athletic Club. Julius moved to Louisiana in late 20s so Morris took over
8 days til release of The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s! Here is something that cracks me up. Dizzy Davis & his fake Mexican PhD. This is in the late 1950s, so he is working while he's working. I wish I knew the story @ the testing.
Happy book is being reviewed for publication day. "The Texas Rasslin' War(s) of the 1950s" is now scheduled for a June 1 launch! Thank you to the great Greg Oliver for making it better & to everyone who helped. You know who you are! While we wait, enjoy this ad for Texas Rasslin'!
BS exclusive. We added a dozen or so new pages to the book with extra last minute UND Hesburgh art. Here are the covers of the programs for Ed McLemore's 12th and 13th anniversary shows, Jan. 30, 1951 & Jan. 29, 1952. Aren't they gorgeous?
Murphy's Law came to TRW1950s as Notre Dame dropped files on me today, a day after Greg Oliver finished the print settings. So, consider this a whet your whistle thing, f/Aug. 14, 1953 San Antonio program. Ed McLemore is angry after Morris Sigel bought off the old SA oppo promoter Bob Kline.
OMG the art on this one! April 12, 1976 at the El Paso Coliseum, El Paso, Texas
We have had an unusual number of roadside porcupines this spring, which also means a lot of road-kill porcupines. There were two down the road from us but today the vultures took over the scene.
So cool being on Great Day Houston yesterday on KHOU 20 as their Houston Wrestling expert. Thank you Travis Rodriguez for your interest in Morris Sigel and the history of Texas Rasslin'.
I am in good company discussing Houston Wrestling and Morris Sigel this week on Good Day Houston on KHOU. Check us out Wednesday!
Every moment of The Hold of the Week are gold. Pics do not do them justice. I may have to binge watch some WWA. @krisplettuce.bsky.social
