The recorded death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is about to cross 1,000 cases. In reality there have likely been a lot more deaths already. Many new cases appear to have no link to known cases, suggesting much of the spread is still happening in the dark.

One massive hurdle in fighting Ebola in DRC: Ituri has nowhere near the capacity it needs for safe and dignified burials, just 7 of 98 needed ambulances, for instance. That means higher likelihood of unsafe burials and new infections as well as longer wait and more anger/mistrust in communities.

But mostly I just wanted to show this table of all the countries where traced contacts are being followed. This was a small outbreak on a small cruise ship and now contacts are being monitored in 32 countries! This is why the world can only combat infectious diseases together...

And that inconclusive US case was finally deemed negative and taken off the list. So this is the epi curve for now: As WHO writes: "Given the long incubation period of up to six weeks, it is not unexpected that cases continue to be reported until the end of the six weeks since last exposure."

The end result was that a lot of trials were set up late and in ways that did not make interpreting them any easier. Here' a table from a great review, the results column speaks for itself.

First confirmed #Ebola Bundibugyo case now in South Kivu Province in the city of Bukavu, a 28-year person who died before diagnosis was confirmed. (But as a suspected case they received a safe burial.) Announcement from the rebel alliance that controls that part of DRC below:
