My Hedychium greenii, from the ginger family, finally bloomed its bright orange blossoms this week. I think I had it in my garden on Whidbey so it is a temperate ginger. AKA Red Butterfly Ginger. #Zingiberaceae #Hedychium #flowers

Beautiful day, but watching the hurricane to the north of us. You can just see the very top of the outer edge of the storm, about 500 miles away. The swell is increasing and will probably hit in a day or two.
Chased these two out this afternoon by opening the back gate and scaring them to run that way. Other piglets, at least 2 or 3 are on the outside of the new fence so they socialize in the evenings. I are smarter than baby pig...

Attended the Kipaepae today at Wiakahiʻula Pāka. This is the third year of the reestablishment of original name of the ancient village area of Wiakahiʻula. I was finally able to meet the kumu hula, Noʻeau Woo-Oʻbrien, thanks to my neighbor Cory who also performed today during the kipaepae.
Two bunches of bananas, the variety is Bludjoe, a baking and out of hand eating banana.
Lots of cool plants and trees today. Philodendron giganteum then Manihot angustiloba, some various Cordyline and then a Euterpe oleracea, the acai palm, and finally the monkeypod that shades them all.
Up on the lanai and I looked down at this beautiful array of color, shape and pattern. Must be a fancy bed in the garden, right? No just pots of fun stuff I am avoiding planting because I am indecisive and lazy.
This wee pine is screaming "Pick me now" so I did. White footed ants were not happy, but they will adjust. Yum. #pineapple
The soft graceful fronds of Rhopaloblaste augusta or Nicobar Majestic Palm. I planted it a year and a half ago and it is just topping 7 feet now. It will get much taller. #palms
My vireya "Alexandr" bloomed for the first time in my garden this week. Huge blossoms and the buds look like rose buds. #vireya #rhododendron

It's Danl of the jungle at Hāmākua Chocolate Farm earlier this month. The suspension bridge leads to a treehouse in a banyan tree where the owners lived when they first moved here.
Super green leaves of one of my Verschaffeltia splendida in the Pōʻalua mala (Tuesday Garden). Beautiful entire leaves with hidden danger beneath. Note the spines on the new spike. Grown from seed started in August of 2023, they (4) are now nearing six feet tall.
Volcano watching is hard work. So fish and chips with Dan and Chris at Pahoa Fish is required.
New bloom on Billbergia ʻTeng Eeʻ in one of the entrance pots. The leaves of this bromeliad are the dark red and dark pink spotted leaves with the wicked serrated edges.

No Dictators Day in Hilo. The crowd went on for a mile or so on the main drag along the waterfront park. 95% of the people are over 50 and of them most over 70. I could count the number of young people on my hands and toes. At a loss to explain that.
After garden, I had lunch at Piʻiani Kitchen in Pepeʻeko. Kim Chee Ruben. Yum.
