Since the University of Michigan Medical School doesn't have a Bluesky presence, here's a graphic showing some of the key demographics of the incoming class of first-year #medstudents that just arrived yesterday.
The cyclosporiasis outbreak continues to grow, and Michigan alone just topped 8,000 cases. We're getting some helpful tips out from @umich.edu: michmed.org/cyclo
I’m not a big U-M sports fan. But I do care deeply about young people getting diagnosis and proper care for #mentalhealth issues and especially eating disorders. Which is why an item toward the bottom of this summary of the new report caught my eye: publicaffairs.vpcomm.umich.edu/key-issues/m...
For anyone planning to be on the @umich.edu medical campus for any reason on Thursday, stop by the hospital courtyard 11-1 to enjoy a celebration of our amazing service dogs, get treats, win prizes, make art, hear music, and get your chance to (checks notes) dunk the outgoing CEO in a dunk tank...
Heading to the Ann Arbor Art Fair? (Or desperately trying to avoid it?) Here's an idea: Go to the Museum on Main Street and see the @umich.edu medical history exhibit - open for special Friday hours as well as Saturday & Sunday. It closes August 30 (and has AC)! michmed.org/museum #histmed
Nice to see the Weather Channel app has an icon at the ready for days like this.
So we just put together this graphic to share from Michigan Medicine, the @umich.edu academic medical center, to raise awareness today. If you feel so moved, please share it on other social platforms along with links to airnow.gov or firesmoke.ca or other useful sites!
This map by @jscarto.bsky.social shows Michigan's cyclosporiasis situation in case rates by county, more precise than the sheer case-count maps you may have seen to date. Wayne, Oakland & Macomb (E/NE of Washtenaw)account for ~40% of MI population. If they turn color after this Thursday's update? 💩
Thank you to everyone seeking care for your diarrhea, ordering cyclosporiasis testing, reporting test results to health officials & running state #publichealth departments that are sharing data & advice in real time and interviewing patients to try to pinpoint a source. You make this graph possible.
It's July, and that means new interns and residents aare starting their jobs at hospitals across the U.S. How did the system of post-medical school clinical training evolve? I trace its history @umich.edu from 1874 to today in this story: michmed.org/GYzAg #histmed #medsky #meded
In 1876, the US celebrated its centennial with an international exhibition in Philadelphia. Each state showcased its points of pride. The Michigan pavilion included this detailed engraving of @umich.edu buildings, which is in this book about the state’s history & celebration: michmed.org/5K35R
With the heat dome firmly parked over Michigan & beyond, my @umich.edu colleague and I put together a short video, complete with jazzy trombone, to remind everyone that older people and people with health conditions need to take special care! More info & links here: michmed.org/zdVKK #publichealth
Heading to or through the Detroit airport? Check out the interactive medical & science trivia game that my colleagues and I worked on, which tests your knowledge while promoting the @umich.edu academic medical center.
On hot sunny days, the fact that I can park my plug-in hybrid SUV below a solar panel array on the @umich.edu north campus to shield it, even as the panels above generate electricity, is pretty neat. (Now if only they would add a charging station for us here…)
Apropos of nothing, here’s the story of the development of the first flu vaccine, by a @umichsph.bsky.social team during wartime with a goal of protecting servicemembers from a repeat of the 1918 death toll: heritage.umich.edu/stories/the-... #publichealth #histmed
There’s a new interactive map showing the existing and proposed new/expanded bus routes for the western suburbs of Detroit. The expansion depends on the outcome of a countywide vote. I made a video giving a quick overview but you can check it out for yourself at storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/dac5...
Heading into #FathersDay, this photo of a doctor who fathered four generations of @umichsph.bsky.social physicians after receiving his own MD from U-M & serving on the faculty for decades seems like a fitting salute. Also a reminder that our #histmed exhibit is a great outing: michmed.org/museum
Gulp. The AI overlords have got me pegged. (OK i guess that comes with the territory when you have a byline on almost everything you write...) See what they know about you: intheweights.com
Just returned to Michigan from Ontario, and this sign just made me sigh. When we booked this trip it seemed likely we’d get to take a brand-new bridge home. I even harbored hope that there would be a stealth opening today. No such luck. Let’s hope we’ve paid our last $10 to the Maroun family.
Pay attention to the men behind the curtain… Great reporting on the overnight saga of the Kennedy Center sign (gift link) wapo.st/4eiT8ZB
Celebrating 10 years of Michigan Health Lab, the website where we share stories of @umich.edu biomedical research, patient care, #healthpolicy insights and #meded innovation with the world. Proud that stories by our team have reached 70M views! Read & subscribe: www.michiganmedicine.org/health-lab
On this anniversary of #DDay, here are @umich.edu physicians & nurses who waded ashore at Utah Beach in July 1944 to set up a hospital. They served 3 years across 3 countries. One of their logbooks is in our #histmed exhibit til Aug. 30. Details: michmed.org/museum www.med-dept.com/unit-histori...
The editorial on federal research funding that sparked an incident at a diabetes research conference came out May 29, and generated only a few social posts at first. But as the @altmetric dashboard for the piece shows, it’s suddenly in the top 1% for attention of all 33M academic pubs they track!
Forget the Stanley Cup finals, this is the hockey stick that matters most: the @altmetric.com graph of attention over time for an editorial in Diabetes Care that suddenly became the center of attention Friday. diabetesjournals.org/care/article... (Data as of early June 6)
There will never be another I Voted sticker as cool or as coveted as the shirt-ripping wolverine. But that shouldn't stop you from voting for top candidates for stickers for Michigan's midterm election! Vote for up to 9 of 30 options, narrowed from 2,000: forms.cloud.microsoft/pages/respon...
Run, do not walk, to the University of Michigan WE Upjohn Peony Garden this weekend or next week! (If you need to take a wheeled vehicle, make it a bus please: mbgna.umich.edu/peony-garden...)
Meanwhile near the former site of the Fleming Building, a friendly squirrel ponders the similarities between the pavement patches and tree shadows….
Absolutely thrilled to win the inaugural @umich.edu Maizey award in the Public-Facing Events category for the #histmed museum exhibit that my colleagues and I worked on and that is open in Ann Arbor until Aug. 30. (Sorry we beat your event, @radiodoug.bsky.social …)
