#bookreview no.15: Dreyer's English by Benjamin Dreyer. A great resource. Very funny. As the partner of a non-binary person I found the section on singular "they" painful to read. But we all learn and grow, and so has this author.

#bookreview no.14: The Trumpets of Jericho by Unica Zürn. Delirious, miserable, and fabelhaft. I will have to read this again in German to truly enjoy the anagrams, which I sorely missed in this translation. But the overall character of the work was engaging and surreal.

#bookreview no. 13: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Life-affirming was how this book was recommended; I concur. Piranesi's joy in his World is contagious. The wonder I felt reading this truly brought me back to the experience of reading The Magician's Nephew as a child.

#bookreview no. 13: Crash by JG Ballard I didn't enjoy this; I wasn't supposed to. I find the premise of "escalating depravity" a little tedious. If I'd been a reader in the 70s I might have been more impressed. The real killer was the prose which was occasionally eye-clawingly cringe.

Silent Green was Berlin's first crematorium, built by progressive movements at the turn of the century. It's hosted a million funerals and in recent years hundreds of cultural events. Today it's home to history, music, plants, and wildlife. In a ca. 90 minute workshop, we'll explore the voices that live here.

What poems would earthworms write in a graveyard? What emerges when past and present collapse into now? What stories can ghosts and statues tell?

Capitalism. The word you're looking for is capitalism.

A sneaky quote paraphrasing the saying by Zizek and Jameson "It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism", by skipping the "capitalism" part and taking a quote from a subsequent sentence. Ultimately the quote becomes "it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of profit-above-all-business," with the message being that actually, capitalism is not the problem, capitalism can like, totally be reformed.

#bookreview: Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. The writing is delicious. I deeply enjoyed the warm characterisations of these ghosts-in-denial & ways in which their obsessions manifested. I've never given much thought to the afterlife, but this book has me full of it now.

#bookreview no.8: The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Not what I was expecting! The characters were superb & a few of the scenes were jaw-dropping. I would have liked to see more of Julian, the novel's mentor figure. I usually hate school novels but this was actually very good.

Went to a wildlife sanctuary at work today and saw a hedgehog in the hospital, an orphan baby marten, and an owl rescued from smugglers 🥺🥺🥺

#bookreview no.7: The Testaments by Margaret Atwood. This book is a page-turner, but the best part is its investigation of a very unusual villain. Atwood balances three unique voices alongside gripping world-building and plot with mastery. Prescient, timely, and, I expect, timeless.
