CHAPTER 1
FROM LIFE TO ASHES
Her brother did not look like himself, in death. A plain white shirt had replaced his luxurious robes and covered him from neck to ankles. His cheeks, which had flushed with life, were now cold and pale. He grasped a saber in one hand, and the other held shining silver feathers. His dragon’s cleaned skull was placed over his chest. Łada was her name. Kazimierz was his.
Knights set his open casket on the pyre. Orzełki they were called, for the white feathered wings fastened to the back of their armor reminded folk of eagles. Hundreds of mourners stood in a half-circle around her family, having followed them from the cathedral ceremony to the cremation by the riverbank. She had seen many of them at her father’s court, but she could not remember their names now.
