Summary:

Instead of wiping him down Nicholas’ hands trail the length of Vash’s spine again, back along his body and over the towel slung around his hips. “There’s another service I offer, actually.” His hands pause when they reach the back of his thighs, and Vash stills beneath him. “Have you heard of a tantric massage?”

“No,” Vash says slowly, though there’s suspicion in his tone. “What is it?”

“Well.” Nicholas’ hands don’t move, still splayed against his thighs and feeling the warmth of Vash’s skin beneath him. “I don’t strictly follow the rules of it, but it’s the closest thing I can compare it to. It’s a more - intimate massage.”

What starts off as a service soon gets Vash in over his head, captivated with the only man who seems able to give him what he wants.

"Don't let Nai be alone." Rem didn't ask Vash to forgive Nai as a child, she asked him to stick with him "no matter what happens". Vash tried everything under the sun to keep that promise while his brother waged war and did unspeakable things. Of course he went mad.

Vash as a child, looking up to Rem with big eyes. Rem is saying: "So, Vash, no matter what happens, please..."

Rem continues: "Don't let Nai be alone."

"I should be the last one to suffer." He didn't simply promise Tesla paradise as a child, he promised her and his kin no more suffering and then lived over a century with the living memory of her pain inside him. Of course he went mad.

Nai hugging Vash, thus exposing himself to the void he's holding. Vash is looking shocked. "I should be the last to suffer", Nai says.

The Plants leave Nai, Tesla leaves them both. She's smiling, she's not suffering or crying anymore. That part of Nai's mission is complete. Only after their kind and humanity is accounted for does Vash turn to Nai and offers him to "go together":

Vash holds a compact void ball in his hand, one he poured his remaining Plant energy into. His hair has gone black. He's saying: "Let's go together, beyond the gate, to our world..."

A different frame of the same thing. Nai is recoiling, begging Vash to stop. Vash says: "I won't leave you alone anymore. Let's go together."

This ALSO means he only starts becoming more active when he's already deep in his feelings and stressed about a repeat showdown with Nai. "This could become JuLai 2.0", says Wolfwood and this is how Vash reacts. (That's more open fear than we've ever seen on him outside active combat!)

"Wait. December… Hopeland's around these parts! Oh, please tell me we're visiting Miss Melanie? Will Wolfwood be there? I need to know if yours is allergic to buttoning his shirts, too!"

And, fine, a preference for deep necklines might not be integral enough of a character trait to carry over from timeline to timeline — that won't stop Vash from cackling himself hoarse if it happens to be true for both.

But then Vash catches the other's expression, how pinched it's become. His own smile dims.

"Wolfwood will be there, yeah. Listen, I…" This world's Vash stops ahead of the dune's crest, leading his visiting counterpart to stop as well, shoulder to shoulder. A soft sigh. "Maybe this isn't the best idea after all. I'm glad you came by. I didn't expect having any company today, and I think I needed some. Things've been— I just— Yeah. But…"

Visiting Wolfwood. No company. Mind spinning, Vash narrows his eyes. Revisits how fucking exhausted this version of himself seems. This is no coincidence.

What if Vash wasn't the only one reaching out?

Rem. She will help. She has always helped.

She's right there, on the other side of the glass. A part of him yearns to run to her, tuck his face against the back of her shirt like he used to — right there, she's right fucking there! — but he can't. She knew. Tesla was scared. They vivisected her, she couldn't breathe, and Rem knew, and…

Night is approaching and the Hunt ahead yet to properly begin; any lines drawn now remain blurry at best, their final shape to be defined much, much later.

The truth is: This doesn't feel like the end. It should be. Wolfwood's bones sing with an ancient-fresh agony, with years and years he hasn't lived, but— He turns his head to the stars. He gazes upwards and watches paper confetti rain from starlight, a constellation the universe came up with just for him.

Is it real? Is it imagined? It used to be. It is.

I see how it is now. That feeling, the yearning that's bigger than one lifetime could contain. It's not a figment of a homesick mind, or a pining heart. It's them. We were meant to be, weren't we, Vash?

"Yeah", Wolfwood mutters and smiles too. "I'm home." Finally, finally.
