I don’t know what it is about a meal that you’ve prepared yourself, but I have never been so proud of myself. Tonight: panko crusted chicken tenders in a spring mix with sliced strawberries and a homemade balsamic vinaigrette I always said I’m a baker and not a cook. I may have been wrong.

I’ve been contemplating sharing this for a while and I just got tired of not talking about it. I tend to overshare but oh well. Anyway, if you’re wondering why I drive 4 hours round trip to visit my dad’s grave but don’t talk to my mom, let me enlighten you.

Typing this out here because I want to talk about this topic but I don’t want to make a thread.

Before my dad died, while he was in the hospital, we had a lot of meaningful conversations. One of the things he told me was that he hoped I would lose weight and get healthy. He expressed genuine concern for me and I told him I’d do my best. He also did something I never expected and that meant more to me than anything else - he apologized for parenting choices he made that hurt me. His hurt for hurting me was palpable.

My dad wasn’t perfect, but he never expected me to be anything other than me. He was excited when I was interested in things he’d been interested in, but he never pushed me to the things he cared about. I have letters he wrote to me for retreats I attended and they emanated pride and joy at the person I was and who I was becoming.

I contrast that with my mom, who I haven’t spoken to since Christmas, who sees nothing wrong with her parenting choices (that involved me choosing if I wanted to be “spanked” [beaten] with a wooden spoon or a belt and washing my mouth out with soap) and who has never been prouder of anything I’ve done than be skinny. Not be healthy. Just be skinny. She has spent my entire adult life offering unsolicited advice and then getting pissed off at me for not taking it even though every time I sought out her advice, I took it. I asked her to be there when my older daughter was born and she told me it wasn’t her place and then she booked a trip to Mexico for a week after my due date. Guess where she was when my daughter was born?

I was formally diagnosed with PTSD after Lily’s birth. Shortly before the diagnosis, I was having suicidal thoughts that landed me in the ER. I called my mom to let her know my husband at the time was taking me. She told us to wait to go so she could meet us to talk to me. She got there and told me that if I kept talking publicly about how I was depressed, someone was going to call CPS and they would take my daughter.

All of this is prompted by the fact that I turned my Facebook back on briefly last week to try to sell some things on marketplace. I was culling my friend list while I was there because of an incident last year and I saw a post on my mom’s page about my younger daughter that also referenced me. She said that my daughter was softer.

In case you’re wondering what could possibly make my daughter have a softer personality than me, it’s having a mother who loves her unconditionally and for who she is. I wouldn’t know what that’s like.

I’m a pretty good cook, but ADHD is hard to overcome. As my girls have gotten older, I’ve been able to outsource more to help with the added benefit of teaching them useful skills. Tonight, Lily got to shred about two cups of cheese. In exchange? Homemade macaroni with pulled pork!

I’ve never been great with hair but I like coloring mine so I’ve always gone to a salon. Unfortunately, I’ve been priced out. I decided to take on coloring mine at home and told my daughters we could do theirs too. Anyway, I’m pretty proud of my work!
