Quantitative Methods Lecturer & researcher in survey representation of LGBTI+ populations
Just finished my third year facilitating a @sserc.bsky.social Summer Research Placement. The immensely impressive participants got me this lovely card. Introducing young people to social research is one of the highlights of my job.
Obviously I teach social research but think I will include one of the chapters from this in my Understanding Data course as @chanda.blacksky.app provides a great account of why thinking reflexively about methodologies & challenging oppressive assumptions within them is important for STEM as well.
Ended the week by updating some of my teaching materials. Made me smile that my past self had time & energy to not only design all the slides but also illustrate some of them…doubt there will be space for that this coming academic year 🙃
Bit sad how excited I was to get this in the post. Perked me up after being ill the last few days😅 Thank you @messagetgi.bsky.social !
Started the week on a high note as I found out I won a College Teaching Excellence Award! Was really grateful to be nominated for this and dead chuffed with the win. Have some exciting teaching plans for the year ahead! @uofgsociology.bsky.social @uofgsocsci.bsky.social
Writing day…do you think I have to include this lot as co authors?😅
This is easily a new favourite. Fantastic from start to finish. It's absolutely beatiful. Ella is one of my favourite characters ever. Nothing beats a wee weegie granny! Also learnt a lot about crofting communities.
Started listening to this today. There is a wee sweary weegie granny in it. Douglas Stuart is going to have me greeting again 😭
My lovely pals at @omipalonepress.bsky.social are letting me pop some stuff on their table at zine fest over the weekend! I should be mulling about on the Saturday so give me a shout if your there 😊
Added one of my comic zines to the stuff I’ve written section of my work book shelf. If anyone wants to buy one of my zines they will be on sale at the Glasgow Zine Fair this weekend.
Just finished listening to this. Absolute must read! Never thought I would get into a book featuring so much economics. Will be particularly interesting to my fellow nerds who miss the way the internet used to be while also valuing the accessibility of the current net.
The Queer in a Wee Place poster has brightened up my office a bit!
Finishing up in the main reading room. Only written about 650 words across two papers but given they are co-authored, I had to get some reading done for them & I’m knackered from BSA that’s not bad 😅 May do a little more writing later. If i get a second wind.
Finished up #britsoc26 with mine & @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social talk on how we incorporate our queer approaches in our methods teaching. Now I’ve taken myself to the Gladstone residential library for a wee solo writing retreat weekend. Have two paper deadlines coming up I hope to have a bash at
Speaking at #britsoc26 this week✨ Thursday: Discussing my chapter on Scotland’s census in @yvettetaylor.bsky.social book Queer in a Wee Place. Friday: @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social & I will present how our queer approaches inform our teaching of social research methods
On my way to Manchester for BSA con & started listening to this. Was lucky enough to be on a panel with @alexhanna.bsky.social years back at the CPDP con. Was excited to see she co authored this!
BSA slides sorted. If your about on the Friday afternoon come listen to @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social & I share how we incorporate queer approaches into our methods teaching and why that matters✨ @britsoci.bsky.social
The Glasgow Lab for Intersex , Non-binary & Trans Studies quilt square for the @transunityquilt.bsky.social is done!!!
Spent this evening working on my contribution for the @transunityquilt.bsky.social . Largest version of Pat the pigeon yet!
The GLINTS patch for the trans unity quilt is coming along nicely. @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social made me laugh when we were trying to pose with it😅
Wild to have a chapter in a book Jackie Kay liked 🤩 Thank you @yvettetaylor.bsky.social for including me in this fantastic collection! My chapter presents Scotland’s 2022 census as world leading for LGBTQ+ representation while argueing this hasn’t translated to positive outcomes for us.
Scots edition of Pat the Pigeon in the Hostile Toon in the latest issue of @greatergovanhill.com !
Kicking us off with a painfully simple bar plot showing how trans men and women (based on text box disclosure) responded to the binary sex question in England and Wales.
At 7 myself and @nrennie.bsky.social are running a workshop for visualising the UK’s LGBTQ+ population for the @rainbowr.org conference. The workshop will introduce participants to the LGBTQ+ data produced by the UK 2021/22 censuses and them participants create visualisations with it.
Was great getting to talk about my chapter in Queer in a Wee Place. I discuss how Scotland’s census is arguably world leading in terms of LGBTQ+ data representation but that doesn’t translate to positive outcomes for our community. Thank you to @yvettetaylor.bsky.social for putting this together!
Been missing my local library while it gets refurbished but on the up side it meant I visited Polokshaws Library for the first time & it’s really nice!
Feel like I’ve been drawing this for ages. It’s annoying when work gets in the way of important stuff like my pigeon comic 😤 Anyway this is Pat the Pigeon in the Hostile Toon. Join Pat and co as they connect on ways their city has became less hospitable for them.
