For anyone saying the subs are too big, here's the official release of Tenchi Muyo Episode 1. Subtitle size varied by company, & it wasn't really standardized. Generally they made text smaller as the 90s went on, but I have a thing for the Big Chunky Yellow subs used here.
Everyone's like "Well maybe you would have money if You stopped eating Panda express every day". I went to one of these things. You know what? It's like 50% rice. People called it expensive, but nobody told me it's half filler on top of that. They gave me like 5 shrimp & a small serving of chicken.
Modern anime is so lame. You use to be able to do product placement in your show, & then when it was translated into english they still didn't care. Now you need to pay "royalties" for that. If I ever make a cartoon I'm gonna fill it with so much copyright infringement no station could ever air it.
Well apparently I'm not allowed to have an opinion on anything. I guess I should have posted the half naked Final Fantasy Summon, or this gem for the 10 thousandth time. You guys know what I'm talking about, I should have known better to even address it.
Strangely, it only seems to be interiors? I haven't done a side by side of everything. but my best guess is they couldn't redo the digital stuff in HD, so when they remade those shots they re-color graded everything. It changes a ton of the aesthetic & I'm not really a fan of it.
Nobody talks about how Lain is half film & half digital, so it's always changing frame rates. The show FEELS different on a CRT in 480i. Also, they COMPLETELY changed the colors for the HD releases. People aren't gaslighting you. The VHS version legitimately looks like a completely different anime.
Bought a bunch of Japanese broadcast tapes & found some Sailor Moon premiers with commercials. The tape spans 2 weekends worth of broadcasts of Super S from 1995. Signal strength is weak, but It'll be on the internet archive soon. It's so cool this even plays. We're so close to losing this stuff.
This might be the worst mastering I've ever seen on a retail anime. Why is it so dark? I swear it's just like that on the tape. Well, at least the box looks cool. (My computer did clean it up a little but that's rough)
The only other info I have is this was like, I guess a series of kid's anime for specific towns, all focused on whatever they produced. They're like tourism tapes you'd get at a Gift Shop talking about how a city if known for it's fishing industry or something. These are all lost for being for kids.
In the anime "Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!" from 2024 they find a "Mint Kun" plush, & Kitami City is the Mint Capital of Japan, so my best guess is this is a kid's anime for that one specific town that somehow made it into my auction. Seems to be "lost media" (nobody's ripped it yet). Neat.
Taking forever to get new content out, so here's a progress report. I figure once I have, oh, 120 OVAs or so I'll put that into a video. I also have maybe 500 hours of Japanese Broadcast tapes to go through, so something like "Lost Media Gacha" or "Finding Lost Media for Fun" would make a good video
Anime is desperately trying to stay weird so you have shows like this still being made. Ganbare Japan! Keep pushing back with your Huge Boob Snake Lady Shows.
I have another lost anime with (I think) a voice from Mayumi Tanaka (Luffy from one piece), & I bet you it's really sought after in Japan....but nowhere else since it's a kid's anime meant to educate people about the Mint Industry in one specific prefecture. A lot of Lost Media is Uninteresting.
Since this is 100% Undocumented Media, here's a clip from the very end. It's SUPER Boring! However, it's likely narrated by Kei Tomiyama, who was Yang Wen-li in Legend of the Galactic Heroes. There's some Otaku who go absolutely nuts over finding unknown works from their favorite voice actor.
I've always been curious if this was somehow better on VHS. As an anime, it's well known for being one of those early Digital series where they upscaled it really badly on later releases. So is it better? Even with VHS-Decode, nah not really. You could argue making it more blurry hides it though.
Insane detail gain from my hacked VCR. Dark scenes got crushed so bad. This is why I got so insane over needing VHS-Decode. Some tapes are basically unplayable without it.
Can you still buy issues of fangoria at Barnes & Nobel? I miss that so much.
I got Haibane Renmei on VHS & when I loaded it up it was only Episode ONE. I cannot believe they were doing this in 2002. FLCL I get since there's 6 episodes, but it's so funny they even tried this that late. From what I can tell, they never even bothered doing the full series this way.
For those who have seen the anime, I believe they BOTH adapt the same first few chapters. The fact mangadex categorizes this as erotica is also funny. Who knows, maybe they're right, I haven't actually read it, but 12 volumes is a pretty decent run so I guess anything could happen.
