The role basically allows Joan Crawford to arrive onscreen as her full self, showing off everything she could do: playing soigné, witty, romantic, tragic. It's an absolute powerhouse performance, assisted by terrific character actors and a camera that is madly in love with its star.

Everything about Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is a master class in misdirection, he even had Janet Leigh and Vera Miles pose together in promotional photos, though they're never onscreen together. He went so far as to put Vera in the shower instead of Janet for his darkly amusing theatrical trailer.
