Casio McCombs, owner of Sundown Lounge, posted a statement on Instagram about the meaning behind the name. The bar was announced this morning as an addition to the Current Landing entertainment district.

"Sundown was a name with a lot of purpose, meaning and thought behind it. | want to acknowledge, respectfully, as an African American man raised in the South, that I am more than aware of the painful history connected to the phrase 'sundown' in certain contexts, particularly the phrase ‘sundown town'. That history is real, and it matters.
At the same time, I believe it is deeply unfortunate to allow that history to permanently taint language that describes one of the most universal human experiences imaginable. The concern being raised is about avoiding potential harm to a community, yet the outcome of that concern is the stifling of a creative expression coming directly from someone within that very community. That is a difficult contradiction to sit with."

"I strongly believe in the power of being able to rewrite narratives but we've heard you and understand not everyone holds that belief. We're building this space for the people, and want that to be felt. The intention behind the name Sundown was to commemorate the universal gathering that happens around that time. Long before bars, cities, or modern nightlife existed, communities across cultures gathered as the sun went down
Marking the beginning of shared time, people came together to eat, talk, listen, tell stories, and experience sound collectively. That is the essence of Sundown."

"Ultimately, Sundown is about transition, release, and presence. It is about what happens when the lights dim, the music takes over, and people come together at the end of the day.

This project means a lot to me, and everything about it is intentional. The name included. For me, it's about taking something and giving it a new meaning rooted in community, music, and shared experience.
