I'm so sick of the economic gaslighting that our politicians perpetuate on a daily basis. AoNZ is a sovereign nation when it comes to our money. Like the UK, THIS is how our monetary system really works. Alt text is long, so added to subsequent posts #NZPol #MMT #FundingTheFuture

Modern monetary theory
1. What's modern monetary theory (MMT)? It explains how money really works.
• It begins with the monetary system we have, not economic myths. • It asks how govts, money, taxation & banks really interact. • Understanding this changes the Q's we ask about economic policy.

2. It doesn't apply everywhere.
MMT isn't a universal theory:
• It only applies where govts have monetary sovereignty.• That sovereignty determines what govts can and can't do. • We must 1st understand when those conditions exist.

3. Monetary sovereignty has 4 conditions.
• The govt must issue its own NZ$ that's used for most trade & all tax paid in its jurisdiction. • The govt's debt should be issued only in its own NZ$.
• That currency should be capable of use for foreign trade. • The govt shouldn't partake in a fixed exchange rate system.

4 Govt creates money.
• MMT explains that govt spending always creates new money • The Reserve Bank and govt work together to achieve this. • Spending must happen before taxes can be paid: the spending creates the money used to pay tax.
• And the government is never constrained by tax: it can always pay.

5. Tax has a different purpose
• Tax doesn't fund govt spending. • Tax removes money from the economy to help control inflation. • Tax redistributes income & wealth. • Tax changes behaviour.• Tax gives value to currency because taxes must be paid in it.

6. Deficits & debt aren't what most people think.
• Govt deficits always leave financial assets in the private economy. • Govt deficits become private sector financial savings.• Govt debt is made up of those accumulated savinqs • Govt bonds are, then, safe savings accounts, not household-style borrowing.

7. The real limits
• Money isn't the main constraint on government, then. • The real limits are people, skills, technology, energy & nature. • If resources are available, govt can mobilise them.• If resources become scarce, inflation is the warning sign.

POWER IN NUMBERS.
Rich or poor, we share one thing in common: each of us only gets one vote. In New Zealand, the richest 5% hold nearly half the nation's wealth, while the bottom 50% hold barely 2%. Money buys privilege, but it does not buy extra votes.
That's why we need to mobilise. Each of us needs to step up and encourage others to vote. Because the only real power we have to hit back at them is through the ballot box.

Wow. Commented on a post over on FB about renewable energy. Had this response. WTF? Apparently, this person, a graduate of St Pauls Collgiate School - Hamilton is a musician. Do the people who follow him think this is OK? Why is he speaking to women on the internet like this?

Green co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick said that the Government could afford to build a more climate-resilient country, but chose not to.

'We can afford to fix these things if we fix the system, if we are willing to fairly tax polluters and we are willing to generate and direct that revenue to build our infrastructure and to build our resilience.' she said.

She said the previous Labour-Green government had started doing that, with the Climate Emergency Response Fund.

That fund used money from the Emissions Trading Scheme, which was paid by companies causing pollution, and gave it to projects that cut emissions or helped communities adapt to more extreme weather.

But the coalition Government closed the scheme in 2024.

'They decided to gut all of that and take the money and put it into trickle down tax cuts... which has served precisely nobody in this country, as the cost of living/ cost of greed crisis has trapped up, along with the climate crisis' Swarbrick argued.

She said the Government want taking Climate change seriously.

In October, Climate MinisterSimon Watts released a four-page "National Adaptation Framework". The previous policy, set by James Shaw as the former Climate minister, had been almost 200 pages.

'I have tried really, really hard to work constructively with this Government on Climate mitigation and adaptation, because ultimately, nobody wins a politicians bickering and the planet burns. But I have no words for you about how much New Zealand has been screwed around by this'. Swarbrick said.

'The Minister seems quite happy to wave around a pamphlet when what we needed was a fully funded plan.'
