The officer involved in the fatal shooting in Maine was hired by ICE this year from the Department of Veterans Affairs Police, according to the senior official. The officer has worked in federal law enforcement since 2017, the official said. Neither detail has been previously reported. The shooter in Maine has not been publicly identified; neither has the shooter in Houston, where the earlier fatal ICE shooting occurred.

The National Guard has been patrolling in Memphis since October of last year as part of a federal task force, established by President Trump, to combat crime in Memphis.

Memphis has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country, according to data from the FBI. But Memphis police say overall crime and violent crime were falling in 2025 even before the National Guard deployment began. Still, some local residents told NPR they welcomed the federal intervention.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is inviting students and young professionals aged 18 to 35 to develop brief videos highlighting the importance of influenza and/or COVID-19 prevention and control. The group is seeking original and innovative videos that encourage communities to protect themselves from flu and COVID-19, highlight vulnerable groups that need protection, and address misinformation and myths. Submissions for the competition will be accepted from August 3 to September 13, with the winner announced in October.

LEAKEY - Cedar Hollow has forested hills, spring-fed ponds and no predators - everything a sambar, Pere David's or barasingha deer could possibly want.

The giraffes can't escape the valley because the hills are too steep. The brush is so dense that the shy bongo antelope are only seen when they visit the watering hole.

Houston businessman Dan Allford's idyllic 1,000-acre Central Texas ranch is home to 13 exotic species from around the world. But to pay for the ton of feed a day needed to keep them healthy, and to maintain a balanced herd, he must sell 5 percent of the animals a year, the amount predators would take in the wild.

"I enjoy taking care of some of these endangered or extinct-in-the-wild animals," he told me during a tour. "But I simply couldn't afford it any other way. By selling these animals to collectors or hunting ranches, it pays for the other animals and keeps three people employed here full time."

Cooke, a former Guardian writer, died of cancer in March 2004. His body was taken to a funeral home in Spanish Harlem on the Upper East side of Manhattan and was cremated two days later. A few weeks after that his family granted him his dying wish by sprinkling his ashes from Starbucks cups in Central Park.

In late 2024, senior MIT postdoc Benjamin Sabatini wrote MIT Professor Eran Egozy to ask just that, and about a collaborative research project between the Center for Materials Research in Archeology and Ethnology (CMRAE) and the MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) to CT scan, chemically and structurally characterize, and produce replicas of the ancient and historical musical instruments housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA).

The Food and Drug Administration posted an online notice about the recall of Taro Pharmaceuticals’ Children’s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension. The company’s website states that the product comes in a berry-flavored solution and is recommended for children ages 2 to 11.

The FDA notice states that the recall was launched earlier this month after customers reported “a gel-like mass and black particles in the product.” Agency regulators categorized the action as one in which the risk of serious injury or health consequences to consumers is “remote.”

The medication was manufactured in India by Strides Pharma Inc., which produces generic and over-the-counter medicines for firms in the U.S. and many other countries. Strides initiated the recall, according to the FDA notice.
