OK, time to weigh in on this. My take: Patrick Dempsey's beginning-of-the-film CAN'T BUY ME LOVE look was a lot sharper/more timeless than his cool, late-film look. (Wait: Was that the point of the movie all along?)

I think the seeming sleaziness of this film's plot, and the way it was marketed, have led it to be treated as the least of the run of winners with which Rob Reiner began his career. On the commentary, even Reiner thinks it's overlooked.
